What Snow Areas Are You Planning To Hit This Season?

Postby Tama on Thu 16/Apr/09 11:29am

We were having a bit of a discussion at work this morning based around this very question. Almost everyone I've talked to seems to be heading to the club areas around Craigieburn but I'm guessing that comes from living in Christchurch and hanging around with a certain sort of people (Zane knows what I'm on about.)

What are your plans?

They're all listed there aren't they? You can pick multiple options.

Yeh, but i am lazy ;)

We generally buy a chill pass and then pick and choose between which fields have the best snow/weather etc for the weekend and head there.

Favourite is probably Ohau, but we often end up somewhere up the Craigieburn range.

I'm crossing my fingers for a first family trip to the snow this year. Most likely to be Whakapapa, but we wouldn't even have to go to an actual field... any old hill would be fine as long as we can slide down it on some black rubbish sacks.

No plans for visits to snow places.

I most winters I see snow somewhere on my rides - Bobbies and Wakamarina (at Labour Week-end) spring to mid last winters

Ohau is wicked. I had a week there early last season. It was probably a bit too early as the snow coverage wasn't the best, but we did get one good dump during our stay at least..

I love the lodge too. During our stay, the staff were really cool, the food was excellent, and the whole place had a good time vibe going on.

I really like Ohau. Hopefully I'll get the chance to spend a long weekend there over the winter at least.

BR, Craigieburn, Temple, Olympus are all highly likley. A trip to Ohau and TC is possible, as are trips up the Franz/Fox Neve's and maybe the Tasman.

I might also get the chance to do some touring around Nelson lakes this year. Suppose we'll see how it goes.

Planning on both the 2 main North Island ski areas this season, as often as possible. Even planning to take the odd weekday off for a sneaky slide when the planets come into alignment. Actually planning a family trip down to Ohakune over Queens Birthday weekend, although nothing will be officially open, there is sure to be snow on the ground there, and I want a headstart teaching my son to ski, just got him some wicked new Salomon Grom 80cm skis, boots, and all the clothing. Really hoping he likes it.

As for the club field debate, you guys in the South Island are spoiled. Wife and I did a week long South Island trip about 6 years ago in a Maui Camper Van, first time I had tried NZ's club fields. Broken River in the rain sucked. But we got an absolutely epic day at Mount Dobson with a foot of fresh, although it was closer to waist deep in that main gulley under the lift line on Skiers Right of the ski area. Missed Ohau because they had a closed day when we blew through there. Would love to work a season up at one of those hick ski areas before I die.

Be sure to visit the clubfields if you make it down to Canterbury.

I will be hammering the Queenstown area fields this year, first time skiing in a couple of years and on my own gear now... living just down the road my main concern will be avoiding meeting the boss up on the hill (there is supposed to be one of us available at work each day).
