What Question Would You Ask The Mountain Biking Police?

Postby Tama on Fri 21/Nov/08 12:48pm

If everything goes to plan we're going to do a section of Vorb TV on the new mountain bike riding police patrols in Nelson.

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/artic ... d=10542521 wrote:Police have added pedal power to their patrols to help put the brakes on crime and road crashes.

Nelson police have set up what they believe is the country's first specialised Bobbies on Bikes unit, replicating the bike cops whooperate in many countries around the world.

Their four specially designed bicycles have the police livery, and come with lights and sirens mounted on the handlebars, while the riders have special uniforms.

About two officers are expected to be out on their bikes in the Nelson area at any given time.

Senior Sergeant Tony Bernards said the idea initially arose in response to the high rate of cycle crashes in the Nelson area.

He did not think police were getting as involved as they could be, and looked overseas, where many forces have 24-hour bike cop patrols, for inspiration.

If you have any questions you'd like me to ask the police about their bicycle patrols post them up here by the end of Monday the 24th of November and I'll see what I can do.

:pmob: What do they do with the bike if the 'perp' runs up a long flight of stairs?
* drop the bike & run
* get off bike, lock it safely, then give chase
* run after said perp with bike held above head
* simply throw the bike at the perp, knocking him/her unconscious and easy to handcuff?

Q: "Do the police in Nelson expect that this experience will give them useful information on what cyclists experience on our roads and do they think there will be any positive impact on cycling related road laws as a result of their work?"

Q: "Was this idea triggered by the loss of the Senior Police Officer a while ago due to a cycling related accident up North? or is it more of a general response to a perceived lack of interest that the Police have in bicycles by the public?"

Great idea  and hopefully a few other police branches will be taking notes, as bikes are more useful in certain situations and the experience that they gain will give them a direct in-sight into what a lot of bikers go through on the roads etc...
