What Language Should I Learn?

Postby scatter on Tue 26/May/09 5:31pm

So I've decided that I need something else to do with my time so I'm looking at evening classes :)

Why a language? I love learning, and I seem to have picked up what I know of other languages fairly quickly

I can understand (if spoken slowly enough) and read French and I managed to get myself in & out of an Italian hospital intact, whilst being mistaken for a Italian-speaking Spaniard   Perhaps my accent needs some work!

But then I learnt Japanese to 7th Form level. Five years and I still wasn't able to read a newspaper  I've never used it, maybe I should do a refresher?

Or perhaps Maori? It's fun to gobsmack the Mainlanders when I pronouce Maori names correctly as is.......a little white girl yelling at them in Maori might be even more funny :D

Whaddya reckon?

I enjoy using everyday words like "I'm going to the whare paku"

and "Hey babe, wanna show me your whare te tangata"

Whatever it is, make sure you can get exposed to it frequently to stay in touch with it.
I did japanese up to stage 1 uni, french up to intermediate 1 (Alliance Francaise).
Even the japanese (10 years ago) comes back relatively easily, but you need the exposure to keep it up the top of your brain.

Theres a few sites eg french.about.com, which can help you with weekly emails etc.

I just done bought a french CD and book to try and get the french back. I'd like to go to some sort of conversation group.

Ya, if I go with French, I'd definitely join Alliance Francaise. Plus we get a fair few French students through my place of work

But Japanese......it's all still there, just need to get it going again

My japanese normally comes out when I'm trying to think in french. :D

I have a friend who teaches japanese, and even these small communications help remake those connections.

Spanish. It's pretty common. And fairly easy to pick up.
