Ok, I'm confused. A thread about a teeny tiny earthquake in Wellington last night, 37 more threads around the current "us vs them" status of cycling on New Zealand roads, but nothing said about 29 workers unaccounted for in the Pike River coal mine on the West Coast?

Perhaps I've missed something...

This is true. I'm sure none of the 29 people still inside the mine have ever ridden bicycles in their lives. Therefore they are of no interest to me.

It's tragic for those boys their families etc no doubt, but I've heard a couple of extremely disturbing items that make me think the worst

Workers had finished their shift and left their tags on the board, when I was mining that was a 'you're on the next plane out' offense. One of the workers who did get out wasn't wearing a watch, you'd be on the same plane home...

Those two items are rule number one in mining, fundamental safety basics that every miner lives by

Yeah I was surprised to hear about the tag board breach. WTF?

I really hope they survive and get out OK. But I doubt it's going to happen.

the watch thing seems fairly self evident ie know the time when yr underground
but I dont understand

Start shift put identification tag on the board when entering mine, End shift take identifcation tag of the board to show you are no longer in the mine. Never worked in a mine before so some industry know it all can correct me if i'm wrong

I agree, it seems not good from what has been reported so far. But I still hope for the best and all are safe.

You are correct. If a tag is left on the board, it means the person is still in the mine, therefore people will go searching for them.
Putting others in danger while one sits at home with a nice hot cuppa does not conform to mining procedures, and will pish a lot of people off.
