Recent Trademe action seems to suggest that there are more than few people out there who are interested in older lightweight bikes. Unfortunately, Trademe discourages communication between its members, making it hard to find out who's who, and what they are doing, so I'll put the questions to this forum instead:

What have you got?
What are you doing with them? Riding? Restoring? Waiting for your collection to appreciate in value?
If you are riding your old bikes, where, when, and with whom?
Here in Auckland we have a monthly Retro Ride that usually attracts 6-12 riders. Is there anything similar going on elsewhere in NZ?
Does anyone else take their old bikes to so-called fun rides?

Hi Dave!

I am slowly accumulating the parts to build my 1977 TI Raleigh (mainly by bludging and finagling, due to lack of wherewithal), but for whatever reasons I don't hear about too many older bikes unfortunately...I won't be able to ride my Raleigh when it's done as it's a couple of centimetres too small, dammit!

Jonty seems to have discovered a few contacts with older bikes - he has a mint 70's Falcon in Revolution, along with a TI Raleigh track bike from the same era.

I saw a Bianchi Specialissima being built up at Burkes a couple of months ago too...

I gather the lower South Island is the place to find the mint retro rides, or so I've heard...

I have a 1986/7 Vitus 979. Weigh's just over 9kg and goes like shit off a shiny shovel!

It's my one and only roadie bike but I love it to death & still manage to chew up the carbon brigade on the hills!

Oli - I have some 1976 Campag Record pedals with the original Cristophe toe clips and Alfredo Binda leather toe straps which I ride on my fixxy. I also have a genuine Brooks Professional saddle complete with the big copper rivets on my old road bike. The old cycling legends such as Merckx used to ride these so it gives me great inspiration on my quest to becoming a legend myself.

I'm looking for a brooks for my fixie, I know they still sell them, does anyone know where?

Brooks still sell their whole range through retail in the UK. If they dont have a reputable NZ importer your next stop is UK online.

Can any-one identify this and or its approx age? And check out those old school quick releases!


The bike is headbadged 'clercy' - the brakes and levers are 'mafac'/'mafac racer' and its a simplex derailer. It is stickered for reynolds steel as well.

The New Zealand importer is Brian Phillips Ltd.
Any cycle retailer should be able to get a Brooks for you.

Those bikes which don't fit but that you can't live without, are a pain in the ass. Despite a policy of only buying stuff that fits, a 1963 Condor Italia and a Frejus have infiltrated my collection, both 2-3 inches too small.
Send me some photos of theRaeigh when its done, and I'll put it on the Retro Ride blog.

I have been given a Healing Classic Competition with Shimano 600 group set. It's in great nick and looks as though everything is original but I'm struggling to find any information on Healing or this bike. I'm guessing it was produced late 70's or early 80's. Any ideas on where I can find out more?
