Dnt '11 Sandbaggers Anonymous

Postby Datsane on Wed 18/May/11 11:06am

This year I'll be riding 12hr solo at the DNT.
This came about from making a bet between two other mates (Cheers Andrew and Blair) in 2009. It could have been worse I might be doing a Triathlon and not a short one either. I'm posting my exploits on here to track my progress or lack there of. And its also added motivation since everyone thinks I'll pike. I missed last year due to lack of funds, so now I'm working part time I'll have some cash, plus some motivation and coffee from work Velo Espresso to do this.

Before you all say you'll just do a couple of laps then stop riding. I like value for money so the more laps I get under my belt the more value I get, plus I hate quitting. Now I'm not going to try for a podium finish, but I'd like to do better than just finish.

Tips welcome and needed. Ways to stop the boredom while circulating, Food to eat and avoid.

So start making your side bets (they do or can bite you in the arse though) or the "velo/club/vorb pool"

I too have learnt that lesson with making silly statements after a few beers.

I thought boredom would be an issue when I started doing 6 hour races, but found it a non issue on an interesting course. I also learnt to do my eating and drinking on course rather than stopping for a rest in the pits.

Try and eat some real food, I did the energy bars and leppin shit the first race then learnt peanut butter sandwiches, easter eggs and bananas did a much better job. Keep the leppins for when you a rooted and need to get a couple more laps in.

Use a mix of water and electrolites, I just alternate bottles.

First 6 hour race I did I had major problems with cramp, so I just trained harder.

Beware, They do get a little addictive I did my first one to prove to myself that I could, then I wanted to better my result and have done a few now shame my results haven't gotten any better.

Having to ride through the pits in your mankini should be enough to make not coming DFL an option. The stress of that will allevaite the boredom.

Oh, and people like Struggling, Slidey and myself giving you the elbow as were come past :p

I like real food while riding and I eat alot while trail riding with mates. Leppin doesn't sit well with me any more, not sure why.

I'll never learn and thus I'll want to do a 24hr next

Russ Hell no I don't own one, thank god.
Struggling and Slidey will pass me no doubt, you I bloody hope not :p

WRT to feeding... I've found I struggle with 'real food' while moving & prefer liquid fuel, others do better on solid food. With longer events, the main thing IMHO is to find something that you can get down & keep down relatively comfortably. The key is to test whatever you plan to use out on longer rides at the intensity you intend to race at. For example. I could quite happily consume burgers and chips if quietly cruising along!!

DNT is probably the dullest most mindnumbing boring 12hr in NZ. Combined with the ridiculous amount of traffic and generally horrible vibe its the only race I've ever pulled out of.

This probably doesn't help you at all.

mate can i give you a tip as is everyone as you asked. 12hr and 24 hrs start to screw your brain after a while if you arent mentally fit aswell, trust me andrew you can do all the trainning in the world but your head has to also be on the job, as for food every one is different, i took eating advice from a chick who has had more prodiums in 24hr solos that most have entered. she eats crap like what you call real food, now i tryed that and no good. this year a paid good money to have someone give me an-eating plan for long distance events. they say that real food sits in ya guts and uses energy to break down that could be best used to drive it. but each to their own, there can always be a happy middle road.

podium aye?? good call. i for one will hope you do really well, it is a goal that can be easly reached with the right support crew and trainning. good luck.

ps. 5 bux he goes for pies and donuts for riding food. lol

Making brooom broom noises while twisting your right wrist on the handlebars.

* Optional screaching noises as you ride off into the sunset.

Adventure racing pit stop food.

1 can of peaches
1 can of creamed rice
1 blender.

combine ingredients. Blend.

Put in bottle. Glug down when need food.

Wont be something you will want to eat for the whole race, but it is good fuel!!

To get your eating right you probably need to try a couple of longer rides at the intensity you intend to race. Go for 4 or 5 hours and try and sort out what food sits well with you. I always find that at the start of a long ride I can handle sweet sort of stuff like bars, jet planes, creamed rice etc. As the time goes on I start craving more and more salty and fatty food. Having some bacon butties sitting there for near the end is probably not a bad idea at all!!

If Dean's coming out of retirement, I might just have to dust off the racing stripes one more time :baaa:
Dr Nick is right, Taupo DNT course is mind numbingly boring, and it got colder with the breeze last year with the fact that you weren't riding through trees for half the course
