Stp1 Upgrade To 9 Speed

Postby Elbow on Tue 1/Sep/09 12:48pm

Hi ,
I've got a STP1 08 with the standard Shimano M475 hub & 8 speed derailleur.
Can i upgrade to an 9 speed cassette without lacing in a new hub?

the cassette will be easy, you just need a chainwhip and a lockring tool to remove it and then put on the 9speed cassette, you will need a new 9 speed shifter and a 9speed compatible derailleur (if your derailleur isn't)

You shouldn't need to replace the hub or freehub
all you'll need is:
New shifter
New chain,
New cassette,
And possibly a new dérailleur (depending on what type you have)
+ maybe budget for a new inner & outer gear cable.
And some shop labour.
easy

Thanks for the replies.
Any recommendations on best parts for the 9 speed upgrade.
ie scram,xt,etc.,and which cassette cluster/group would be more suitable
Bike used for bit of everything, staircases, skate park, occasional mtb rides, chasing my boys, flat tricks, curb jumping.

How often do you crash? And how much $$ can you afford?

If you are hucking around things and crash a fair bit - dont get pricey unless you have loads of $$

XT Shadow or x9 - personal preferance really. Both will work fine for years if looked after. both will get trashed by a single rock/branch/tree stump.

If you want bling, XTR or X0.

If on a budget, Deore or x7 work well enough.

All depends on your budget I guess
if you're only running one ring on the front, go for a medium or short cage rear mech instead of a long cage.
And whatever your budget can stretch to.
shimano SLX is a good option, so is sram X7

You won't need a new rear derailleur.

crap - i forgot that rather important little bit of information :(

Ignor my post above.

get the shifter that matches your derailleur. Get the cluster that has the right spread of gears (and a new chain).

If you muck around with them heaps you can sort of get them going roughly so long as you tune them all the time and don't get anything dirty - if he's buying the shifters anyway why not get the ones that work properly? :eh:
