Proposed Road Law Changes - What Do You Like?

Postby Tama on Wed 19/Aug/09 5:30pm

OK, as by popular request I'm putting up a pole poll! I've just been reading The Nelson Mail (as you do) and looking at the proposed changes to the road laws. Some are pretty choice, some a pretty bleah, some are really OVERDUE.

What ones do you like?

At the very least they must be forced to stop and check. I feared for my life in the USA crossing with the pedestrian lights with this stoopid rule.

I never had a problem with that whilst I was over there. I always looked to make sure it was safe to cross before I crossed the road. In fact much like I do here, or any other time I cross a road :eh:

Good lord, it was bad enough when they told people they could be ticketed for not indicating correctly at roundabouts - imagine the carnage if they actually changed the give way rule

When I was there there was five lanes each way and lots of SUVs - its difficult to see safely for the duration of the crossing. They'd race down the inner lane next to stopped big vehicles and expect to go through. Hence why it should be mandatory to stop.

Personally I'd rather this never happened. I think it puts the right of the vehicle above those of the pedestrian for a safe crossing.

:D wasn't too bad sitting behind the wheel!
Although they would have to change the crossing sequence at most traffic light controlled intersections here

Ah, fair call.

Although I'd have thought stopping would be a given in this situation.

I don't get that new proposed turn law.

Change the give-way rule for turning traffic. Traffic turning right would have to give way to traffic turning left into the same road.

Can someone give me an example of it... ta...

Currently if you are driving down a road and want to turn left and a car is coming toward you wanting to turn right into the same street, you have to give way. Unless of course there is a car behind you going straight ahead, then you have right of way. This law is based on assumption, that the two turning parties assume the 3rd car is going straight.

Everywhere else in the world, if you are going to turn left (right for left hand drive) you have right of way, and the car coming towards you has to give way. Meaning both you and the third car behind can travel through the intersect with no assumption made.

Is that clear, or more confusing?

Alcohol and licensing laws are way off. That's a good place to start and totally feasible. Some of those options would be good solutions in a perfect world but unfortunately the financial cost and the difficulties adapting them make them unfeasible.
