Kiwis Take On The World This Weekend – 24 Hours Of Adrenalin

Postby Chickenman on Thu 23/Jul/09 9:05am

A strong contingent of Kiwi riders will be competing in the 24 Hour Solo Mountain Biking World Championships in Canmore, Canada, this Saturday and Sunday (25th-26th July). Megan Dimozantos, Tony Hogg and Thomas Lindup will take on the world starting midday Saturday and completing their last lap before 1pm on Sunday (6am Sunday – 7am Monday NZ time).

All riders have had a successful season to date. Megan Dimozantos won the Women’s division of the inaugural Alpine Epic stage race in February with team mate Sadie Parker-Wynyard, then went on to take second place at the 24 Hours of NDuro solo nationals. She also came 7th in the Elite Woman’s category at last year’s World Championships.

Tony Hogg is making his debut to the World Solo Championships in the Elite Men’s category after winning this year’s 24 Hours of NDuro by a substantial margin, then backing it up with a win in the 12 Hours of Naseby. He is in outstanding form after also placing 3rd in BC Bike Race at the beginning of the month, a Canadian 7 day stage race from Vancouver to Whistler.

Thomas Lindup is returning to Canmore this year to defend his under 25 age group World Championship title after winning the age group category last year and placing 7th overall in the men’s field.

This year’s 17km course is a delightful mixture of predominantly technical single track and some fire trail. “It’s a good course… A tough course. I think it will split the field quite early. There are some good climbs in there and it’s about 90% single track”, Dimozantos said. “I feel strong. Having said that, it’s hard to know what to expect, even after competing last year. 24 Hour Solo racing is a comparatively new discipline, so there are a lot of new faces this year and no one knows what to expect from those riders. There’s also some big names missing, such as last year’s male winner, James Williamson and last year’s 2nd place female, Katrin Van Der Spiegel. I’m looking forward to it. It should be a good race.”

You can follow Megan, Tony and Thomas’ progress on the ADRENALINLive webcast accessed in the left hand pane on the 24 Hours of Adrenalin website. Some riders will also have a twitter account set up to broadcast rolling results from. Megan has set up a blogspot to keep people up to date on her travels, http://megandimozantos.blogspot.com/

We felt left out :D

It'll be good having more of a kiwi contingent there this year, it is a real shame Erin couldn't make though, that would have been the icing on the cake!
