Specs? Details? :eh: Parts list? :D

I'm interested in making my own too, but haven't a clue of all the bits I'd need.
And it seems to cost a lot... almost as much as buying a pre-made set.

You can pick up cree leds from an electrical engineering place in frankton http://www.jaycar.co.nz/stores.asp?Stat ... h%20Island . Basically you just need a couple of cree leds, reflectors, and a driver control box thing(so you don't over drive them). then batteries.... Talk to the crew in that shop about it, they'll help you out :)

I think you may be able to build a light set with 4x the 250 lumen bulbs, thats equivalent to 3 ayup light units :alien:

If you can find some good, cheap and light batteries(damn it i've just used up all 3 engineering parameter things :( ) to run with them you could build a mint light set at a relatively low cost

better to get parts from nightlightning or overseas ( cutter, ledsupply etc ) jaycar want 40 something bucks per LED

edit: I built a 500 lumen unit ( 3x cree Q5 )running off NiCads for about $200 from cutter parts and RC car batteries

Certainly 18650 batteries are a good way to go, way better than SLA bricks but the chinese cells from DX are very variable in capacity. Japanses or Taiwanese cells much more consistent.
After some failures I found it much better (& only a few dollars more) to get a pack made up by http://www.batterybook.com. They're in Australia, will make up exactly what you want with protection etc and only charge $12 delivery, unlike the US based stores which you get standard packs only and wanting like US$70 courier !!! Nightlightning source their packs from siomar

The turboferret holder are nice though but I always trust welded packs more than springs. Don't even think about soldering 18650 cells, they explode. Shame you can't buy individual 18650 cells and holders yet within NZ

Cutter supply Jaycar with leds. They aren't the quoted R2s either, best to go direct to cutter.
