bloody blatant revenue gathering. his reason - if i was photographed by a camera i would not get the ticket. no other reason.
other than not being able to get me for speeding, its not exactly hazardous or dangerous is it.

Sucks, but there's lots of reasons for requiring number plates to be visible. It's not just speeding... What about if someone bowled you over while you were out on your bike and you/passers by were not able to take the numberplate down 'cos it was obscured?

Did you ask him what you could do about it? Because I believe that a 2nd 'plate' on the end of the bike rack isnt legal either (someone correct me if Im wrong), and thats the most logical solution.

Thats shit.. So basically its not OK to drive around with a bike rack without a bike on it?..

The law around bike racks is really unclear, as by design they will obscure the license plate, however its illegal to make a plate to go on the other side of the bike rack, and you cant actually buy a 3rd license plate.

So in effect bike shops are selling a product that is illegal to use.

Submit that argument to LTNZ and see what happens. I reckon you will get off this.

I've had words with a police officer about bikes,racks and the obscuring of plates. Seemingly racks are by design, illegal. The officer was going to ticket us for the bikes obscuring the plate till we talked him round, where the hell else where we supposed to stack dh bikes? Apparently its breaking the law
Interestingly enough, it would seem rally and race cars with the driver and co-driver's names on the windows shouldn't pass a warrant because the letters should technically count as a tint!

I've had this argument with my Dad, who was an officer of the law. His take on it was that if I use a bike rack it's my responsibility to make the number plate visible, i.e. move the plate.
On his boat trailer(s) he had a removable light/plate bracket that he would tie onto the back of the boat and move between boat trailers. I was thinking about doing something like that.
