Hi all, another race, two days after the last Kermesse

This racewas another under 23 race, 120kms , 19 laps on the same circuit, anapproximate six kilometer flat circuit, with a few cobbled sections, justto break it up. Again, race plan was to race, not win. TheTryptic Ardennes looming closer on the horizon, a horizon whichshould ideally be from a taper and recovery perspective. What most ofthe younger boys needed was solid aerobic-anaerobic thresholdconditioning, in order to cope with the demands of the much more rigourous Triptic.

The reasonwhy Marc and Novie had not competed this day was due to the fact that (onceagain the 'young dream', is too old), and Shane needed some higher intensitywork, with less duration in nature. Shane's aerobic base building phase hasbeen longer than the others secondary to the fact that he has been over at theUCI training camp for the previous five weeks before he got toBelgium, plenty of low intensity work there. So these two (Dream and Novie),sat this one out preferring specific erg work which seems more in linewith what they're needing at the moment.

So thatwas the plan, however the boys could hardly contain themselves and things didnot go so according to the 'official plan'

The'starters', Myron feeling his 'bounce' back, obviously-giving the'West-side here.'

Early on the action again was fastand furious with many short lived attacks, here the NZ boys keeping it tight, looking after one another

Image

Aaron (Gatie) and Myron behind, bothlooking lean mean and dangerous...

Image

Myronwas riding pretty aggressively in the first half of the race, here he goesagain..

Image

None of these boys are keen tocover. When a (formally) track sprinter, gets some good aerobic base and thenintensity under their belt, then they're a dangerous thing...

Image

Scully, showing somegood race tactical know-how. Played his cards close to his chestearly on, riding comfortably.

Image

But when he (Scully, or the 'Scud')went, he went. Here he is involved in a serious break with about six laps togo. The break consisted of seven strong riders who quickly established a 30-40sec lead, meanwhile the stretched peloton was thinning out...

Image

Good aero position, mint kit.Training wheels in though.

Image

Looking increasingly like a seriousathlete.

Image

Meanwhile west had 'shutit down', disgusted, he got off his bike 'hating' the belgie under 23 racingstyles. This 'up and down' nature of the race not suiting his needs to constantaerobic threshold development work, 'building the engine' so he's competitivecome Under 23 World Time Trial Champs, his main aim for the season.

The break continued toextend its time gap. Scully, driving it...

Image

Meanwhile, Shem decided that heshould probably be in this break and pretty much jumped outta cruise mode androde across by himself, making short work of the process (notice the tongue inthe usual position ;-P)

Image

Here's Scully driving it outta thecorner on the second or third to last lap.

Image

Check out the expression on the faceof the guy trying to hold on to Skullie's wheel.... probably a mixture of painand surprise...

Image

Trying so hard, he's almost deckinghimself in the process...

Image

He loves the pain though doesn't he?

Image

Speaking of old chaps who've missedtheir arvo naps, check out this poor ole fella.. (joke... Mark, Reidy and Sarah;-))

Image

Bythis stage it was obvious that the break was going to make it..

Image

Inthe last lap, splitting again. Scully making sure that he was going to be init.

Image

Unfortunately Scullies' break offour contained two of the same team-mates, meaning they have the upper hand, taking it in turns to attack. This tactic known as 'one-two-ing', means thatwhile their team-mates don't have to cover, the others do. The aim of thistactic is to wear out the other competitors, therefore increase your teamschance of a win. The breakaway which had been working well as a teampreviously, now a 'semi-team', with all sorts of possible race strategies andpermutations possible for these guys, who's win was all but assured bynow.

Image

Shem was happy enough, he didn'thave to chase as his teammate was up the road....

Image

He was keeping things handythough...Bell lap.

Image

Sure enough, they'd 'one twoed'Scully one two many times, here he is rolling over the line for a well deservedsecond. You'll notice Shem sneaking up on the outside in forth place. Shemhad-had the smarts be able to cruise a bit in the chase group, so as not toruin Scullies chances of winning, saving his energy (seen here 'gasing' it upthe finishing straight), others cyclists from his bunch 'popped' out the back.Shem easily took forth, nearly third. Myron won the bunch kick, top ten(?), noworries.

Image

Post race, Scully pretty 'tapped',Shem not too bad. West, still 'disgusted' ....Lets see how the pre-raceplan of "cruise a bit and look after yourselves, you're going into a bigtour in a few short days", puts them in-stead forthe Triptic Ardeenes tour in a few days...

Image

Butyeah, Scully, you're still 'daman.' West's even more disappointed...

Image

Hey scully, no one'sgonna argue with ya mate, you look as though you're just about totake someone out! ;-)
