Mmmmmmmmmmm Delicious Pork

Postby Henry Dorset Case on Tue 19/May/09 11:05am

I love pork. I love bacon. I love ham.

I've been concerned for a while now about buying quality produce, including meat. Our butcher supplies free range pork, and the best bacon. It should be for the money, but I am prepared to pay more if I am happy that the animals have had a good life before slaughter, they are slaughtered humanely, and I don't have to watch it or be involved.

Now, given the recent bad publicity (and massive media beat up, which I suggest is Mike King being a nasty fucker, which he has the reputation for being)

How much pork will you be eating this month? Will you be making enquiry of your purveyor as to provenance? Will you be prepared to pay more for better product if the wee beastie has had a better life? Does that extend to other meat products? Does it extend to eggs?

Well would you, punk?

Ditto - I'm happy to eat animals and their produce but I see no point in making their lives a living hell in the name of profit margins.

Happy pigs taste better to :)

Oh yeah, who's your butcher?

If a supermarket, then Freedom Farms bacon, otherwise my butcher can advise where he got the pig from. If they don't know, I don't buy. Most butchers will do local, or fairly local pork products. Kiwi Bacon is a mix of NZ & Aus piggies, as are pretty much all of the pre-packaged offerings, and they taste like crap compared to the real thing.

And always freerange eggs, not just because they are more humane, but because they taste like eggs! I refuse to buy a non-freerange egg, but don't slam people who do, because it's my choice, not my religion.

Never eat pork anyway, do like bacon though. I always choose free range eggs so I guess if I'm going to not be hypocritical I should investigate what sort of bacon I eat. It's becoming a full-time job doing the research required to make sure your choices back up your personal beliefs. Took me ages a while back doing research on cosmetics/toiletries/detergents etc to find a list of companies that don't test on animals. The system certainly doesn't make it easy for anyone who wants to do this.

Mmmmmm Bacon, luv it and a few butchers still traditionally smoke it and don't use Nitrates.

The Freedom farms naturally smoked bacon if at the supermarket

They're clever, clean animals. They also have wicked as razor-sharp teeths. And they taste great.

I find pork quite bland though. I'm very partial to bacons and hams though.

Pigs aren't dirty animals at all, at least no dirtier than a cow or a sheep, or a chicken.

This thread has increased my hunger for pork 200%
