Sram X9 Shifter Rebuild

Postby Mattus on Sun 17/May/09 4:11pm

Hey all I took the bottom paddle shifter off my rear x9 sifter (new style) which I now realise
I shouldn't of done. Now I cant get it to work properly again. Does anyone know if I can get it to work properly again or amI best of taking it to the lbs or just buying a new shifter?

you're fucked, i did it once, managed to somehow get it back together afterabout 2 days of fettling, they really are not designed to be taken apart at all. I tried everyone in the shop i worked in at the time, they didnt have much more of a clue than i did. If you can, put everything back where you found it. and dont do it again.

I've done it, getting the spring rewound just right is the key. I haven't any tips beyond the stuff on mtbr etc though.

if you get stuck send it up and I'll rebuild it for ya. bugger shelling out for a new one.

fingers crossed maing.

don't get the cable that comes with two heads { I think jagwire made them }

a cut cable is almost impossible to feed through a sram shifter :(

Yea ill just go to the lbs and get a cheap one and i figured that a cut cable doesnt like to go trough sram shifters!

I've done it before. Sorry, All I can recall is I had a bit of an aha moment when I figured it out. I do have a vague memory of focusing on the wrong hole for the spring which turned out to be red herring. Also, the hole lines up differently whether you have it in the highest or lowest gear. Fiddle around in both positions. I also have a vague memory of realizing that the spring didn't have to be as taught as I first thought.

My camera is f*cked, but perhaps someone will be good enough to upload a photo of theirs?

Yea i was having a go with it in high and low gears and i think i did it right so ill just have to wait and see if ive done it properly when i get a new cable.

It really is an overly intricate design. It doesn't feel like it's been designed for end-user fiddling, yet you need to take it apart every time you change the gear cable. Go figure. The older X9 design was much simpler to swap gear cables.

I will remember to video/take photos next time I have to pull mine apart. Or instead I'll be making a similar post to this one in a bout 6months time :)
