Wellington/ Wairarapa Doc Track/ Facility Condition Alerts

For your safety, every effort has been made to ensure this information is correct at the time of writing. However, you should contact the local DOC Office or Visitor Centre for the latest updates. Weather changes will affect the conditions in the backcountry. Always check the latest weather report ( http://www.metservice.co.nz ) before you venture out, and be prepared to change your trip according to conditions.

RIMUTAKA INCLINE, RIMUTAKA FOREST PARK
A large retaining wall will be constructed near the downhill side of Prices Tunnel during May 2009. Please take care, as trucks and machinery will be operating on the site.

MT MUNROE MT BRUCE TRACK, PUKAHA MT BRUCE
The public track through Pukaha Forest from Braddocks Farm, Mt Munroe Road (South) to SH2 south of the Mt Bruce Visitor Centre will be closed until further notice.

WAIOTAURU TRACK, TARARUA FOREST PARK
An 80m section of the track has slipped into the river, approx. 10min from the Fenceline carpark at Otaki Forks. Attempts are being made to keep a route across the slip, but due to the current unstable nature of the slip care needs to be taken when using this area. Present access is across the base of the slip and should not be attempted in wet weather or high river flows.

FIELD HUT TRACK, TARARUA FOREST PARK
Upgrading of the formation and drainage on the lower section of Field Track will begin on 14 April 2009 and continue for approximately 10 weeks. The track will remain open during this period and users are asked to take note of signage and requests of workers on site during this period, as small motorised machinery will be in use.

ATIWHAKATU HUT, TARARUA FOREST PARK
The hut and surrounding area will be closed from 14 April for the construction of a new hut. The adjacent track will remain open. Please exercise caution when walking through the area as construction activities will be underway. The new hut is expected to be open by end of May 2009.

CASTLEPOINT LIGHTHOUSE
A major upgrade of the track to Castlepoint lighthouse will begin on 27 April 2009. The track may be temporarily closed during the course of the project. Heavy machinery will be working in the area. Please follow information signs and instructions from workers on site.

Changes to other facilities and services

Tararua Forest Park:

- Oriwa biv, Mt Dagg hut and Harris Creek hut have been removed. The woodburner at Cattle Ridge hut has been removed and won't be replaced.
- A section of route between Ruapae and East Peak, north-east of East Peak on the tops between Herepai and Dundas huts, grid ref. 214543, has eroded on both sides of the ridge. Roots and branches only are holding the ridge top track together. Please take care when tramping in this area.

Rimutaka Forest Park:
Battery Stream bivvy is closed due to major structural damage which is beyond repair. It will be removed during the summer of 2008/09.

Lake Wairarapa:
1080 and Feratox (cyanide) has been layed in bait stations at Mathews and Boggy Pond Wildlife Reserves near Lake Wairarapa. Visitors are advised to follow the instructions on the signs when entering the area.

Note: This notice only reports on changes that differ to what is stated in brochures and on the website. Other tracks, facilities and services in the Wellington region are operating as normal.
