Te Miro To Be Designated A Forest Park

The 40-hectare forest, between Cambridge and Morrinsville, has been covered in pines but they were recently harvested and will be replaced by redwoods.

The pines were planted as a cash crop to be harvested every 30 years but the financial benefits of doing this have been labelled "insignificant" by the Matamata-Piako District Council.

Mayor Hugh Vercoe saw the change as a positive step for keeping people active as well as for the environment.

The relatively regular harvesting of the pines was seen as a negative due to the soil erosion and the damage to cycling tracks it created. Redwoods deter weeds from growing and increase land stability.

Te Miro Forest will be based on a vision of Rotorua's Redwood Grove, which has walking and cycling tracks as well as a visitor centre. Mr Vercoe said planting of the new trees would begin soon.

Love it!

A big thank you to all the mountain bikers that have been working away behind the scenes, liaising with the Council, and buidling, maintaining and rebuilding tracks. You have sent a clear message to the Council that there is a demand for recreational activities at Te Miro. This is a fantastic outcome, and will be enjoyed by many mountain bikers for generations to come. I look forward to taking my kids out to Te Miro to ride at the "redwoods" in a few years time. :)

there are trails there already, but this means that more trails will be developed in the "forest park" (what I rode a few months ago, that had just been partially felled)

If you are going to try the flat water at te miro you may as well give a road bike a crack.
