Source to Sea Cycle Challenge

The SOURCE TO SEA CYCLE CHALLENGE is a 100-mile (161.9km) journey from St Arnaud to Westport. The roller coaster route follows the Buller River from the source at Lake Rotoiti to where it meets the Tasman Sea in Buller Bay, Carters Beach. The Source to Sea is for cyclists who want a challenge, who want to ride in spectacular environments and do a cycle event with a fun atmosphere. The Source to Sea is a story; you ride a bike for 100-miles down Mother Nature's biggest rain rut in the South Island - the Mighty Buller Gorge.

The Buller River is New Zealand's largest undammed river. You will witness in the space of hours the growth of a small alpine stream that gradually gets fed more and more water until it turns into a massive river of great volume. While this is all happening you ride between 3 national parks, Nelson Lakes, Kahurangi and Paparoa. The Buller Gorge itself is an attraction and there is no better way to enjoy it than from a bicycle (or kayak). It's an event with passion, for cyclists by cyclists. (Pun intended)

Riders rave about the event; it's a trip, be part of it!

Message from Race Directors
"We really hope you can make it to the 2009 Source to Sea. If you've done the ride before you'll discover some pleasant changes and tweaks we've made to the event based on valuable rider feedback. If 2009 is your first Source to Sea, we know you'll have a truly enjoyable and memorable experience. The event route is something very special and a bicycle is by far the best suited vehicle for the job. You'll get fit for Summer and do a wickedly fast time for 100-miles." We love it ... we hope you will too. - Nathan and Mike

is this as easy as the profile makes it look?
Looks to me like a 90km downhill, followed by a launching ramp allowing you to fly to the end.

Seriously though, this looks like a fairly easy, however long, ride. I'd possibly be happy to do it, but don't want to screw myself before Taupo.

You've got two weeks to recover
And K2 two weeks before S2S, might be a good series.

That's insane. (crosses off race list for 09). Some of these race entry prices are getting pretty steep aye. Add to that your license, transport, accommodation, bike maintenance etc and you really do need sponsorship.

Why is it so much more for the "Pro". In reality most licensed riders don't get that much support and most have to fork out these race fees themselves. Can't understand how they warrant an extra $30 for this selection of riders.
