Mmmmm... Delicious, Nutritious Frozen Nightshade Berries

Postby Tama on Mon 6/Apr/09 12:14pm

http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/2317597 ... us-berries wrote:The New Zealand Food Safety Authority (NZFSA) plans to call South Island food company Talley's today after a man found a bag of frozen peas he said was made up of nearly 50 percent poisonous black nightshade berries.

It is one of several reported case of contamination of Talley's products.

Humphrey Elton, a father of preschoolers, said he complained to Talley's six months ago after finding the berries in a bag of peas.

The company had simply sent him a $5 cheque to replace the peas and a letter saying the berries were not toxic, Mr Elton said.

NZFSA director of compliance and investigation, Geoff Allen, said today almost 50 percent contamination was unacceptable.

But were they organic black nightshade berries? Organic berries taste better and are much better for you. :)

as much as I hate to say it, I wish someone had died (preferably a small child) from this cock-up. Not because I hate children, but because then they can't eg taway with sending $5 to affected parties. The 'mistake' they made could easily have killed someone, and if it did, they would really have to pay and fix their systems. So many people have found these damn berries, and huge amounts like above, so it's just bloody good luck, not good management, that has saved lives so far.

This is my favourite bit..

"Talley's should be stipulating maximum levels of weeds and contaminants for the peas which were mostly grown by contractors, Mr Allen said."

WTF..!!

What about zero percent weeds and contaminants

But then we'll miss out on all the vitamins and minerals weeds and contaminants bring to foodstuffs :(

mmmm nightshade berries

As a small child of about 3 I mistook them for black currents and scoffed a handfull. Cue stomach pump and night in hospital, not to mention a severe telling off for eating things I shouldn't. Didn't do that again. Have to say nightshade isn't particularly delicious. Stupid Talleys need to sort their shit!

Your next mission is to build a colour sensitive pea picking machine that can differentiate between lovely green peas and horrible black poisonous berries. If you can invent it you can make a fortune because OSH legislation is such that if said machine existed then they would have to buy it to eliminate the risk.

Gregg Furniss has already done it:

Although I would have thought there's already legislation in place to stop food manufacturers from including poisonous items in their products?

uuummmm, am I missing something here or would a human fit this requirement (assuming they can tell the difference between green and black)?

this story was on the TV over the weekend. The issue was that the nightshade berries were unripe: i.e. green.

they are about the same size and colour as the peas, but had a little stalk. colour grading not an option I would think.
