What Should The G20 Do To Solve The World Financial Crisis?

Postby Tama on Thu 2/Apr/09 8:44am

Looks like the G20 are getting ready for a pointless constructive week of knife fights consensus and bickering strategic planning to save the world...

http://www.reuters.com/article/ousiv/id ... nnel=10504 wrote:French President Nicolas Sarkozy said on Wednesday neither France nor Germany was satisfied with current proposals for an accord at this week's G20 summit and warned that he would not accept any "false compromises."

Leaders from the Group of 20 rich and emerging nations are arriving in London for a summit billed as a watershed in efforts to battle the worst economic downturn since the 1930s.

There is strong pressure for an agreement but divisions have shown up between the United States and Britain on one side and continental Europeans over the balance between extra financial stimulus and the need for regulation.

Sarkozy did not explicitly repeat a threat to walk out of the gathering but said he would not be party to any attempt to sidestep firm proposals for change.

What do you think they should do? (see poll)

Come on now James - that won't solve anything.

We're looking for constructive options - like raising money for the needy by auctioning Dubya's internal organs.

It's getting quite intense in London town.

London's Metropolitan police said the man had collapsed on the street in London's financial district.

He was looked at by two police officers who called an ambulance.

Police said they had to move the man after protestors hurled bottles at them.

He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Police did not give a possible cause of death.

Riot police staged baton charges to try to disperse several hundred protestors gathered around the Bank of England after a day of protest around the G20 summit.

Killing that protestor is a good start. They should round the rest of those hippies up and give them a dirt nap.

I'm glad people are protesting. There should be more of it, we're all too politically apathetic.

Who gives a shit about this recession/depression anyway. Economic forces have never had as much infulence over society as political and military forces, and currently those are stable. And if that changed, then the economy would be the least of our worries.

Wooo yeah! Print more money!

http://www.stuff.co.nz/business/world/2 ... turnaround wrote:The US$1 trillion G20 package to save the world economy should help boost fragile consumer and business confidence and avoid contagion, but is no silver bullet to end the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression.

Expectations had been low for the London G20 summit after a series of leaked draft communiques offered little more than the usual rhetoric on doing whatever it takes to fight the recession, amid public bickering over what that could entail.

True, there was no pledge of extra cash directly to boost economies but the $1 trillion figure on new financing, mainly through the IMF, impressed markets and helped send stocks sharply higher.

It raises the Fund's kitty to help countries by $500 billion and adds another $250 billion to the IMF's Special Drawing Rights -- in essence printing money to help countries in need.

The leaders also agreed a $250 billion package to boost world trade, which is set to shrink this year for the first time since 1982.
