I'm all for it - who cares if it's practical? We should be stoked that any kind of cycling initiative is at the forefront of politicians thinking, fuck the negativity! Even if it ends up being bits of cycleway connected by existing routes it's got to be good for us and for cycle tourists from all over the world.

Bring it on...

lets make it out of timber to use the surplus radiata pine that is been growing, the sawmills wouldnt have to close either and the track team could train on it :D

Nice idea..
could be like a big long velodrome surface with high banked corners so you dont need to wipe off speed.

Nice idea but an impossibility due to cost etc, if it did exist it would have low usage.

Much more benefit would be cycleways in the main cities, where thousands of people spend thousands of hours riding every week.
For example, there are no cycleways in NZ's second biggest city (Christchurch), that would be a good place to start!
My definition of a cycleway is a path/track where you can get between two major points without much interruption - the current 'cycle paths' are so bitty and interrupted they are a complete waste of time.

Here's my artists impression of how elevated cycleways could work in Chch, just stick them in the air on stilts over the footpaths (and over traffic lights), added benefits breathing cleaner air and nice views :D

chain gangs like the wide west would get it done, and it would clean out the prisons. With a portable saw mill they could mill while they went. Upskill the labourers, Would create a great work ethic sadly missing in this society. there are just so many pluses to this.....

its not about whether anyone will actually use it, its going to break the recession and create untold wealth :satan:

MFW thats brilliant we are thinking the same

A viable option, but not really a cycleway. Unless they mark it out with buoys.

They could always hire out dive gear.

Along those lines they could nail planks onto the 2 cook strait cables .. make it easy to find your way across, and provide a good north/south option .. so fogged up dive masks wouldn't be to blame for head on crashes .... :D :D
