Cyclist Flown To Hospital After Charity Ride Crash

Postby pb on Sun 1/Mar/09 2:24pm

From stuff.co.nz:
A cyclist has been flown to hospital after crashing during a charity bicycle ride in Canterbury today.
The 45-year-old woman had been in a group of about 40 riders when it appeared she collided with another cyclist 8km west of Rangiora, Kaiapoi Sergeant Graeme Crosson said.
She was flown to Christchurch hospital with unknown injuries.
The woman was one of 500 riders taking part in the Canterbury Hospital Charity Bike Ride, on Oxford Road between Cust and Rangiora.

Yep, the money raised might nearly cover the helicopter costs.

In the manawatu theres a yearly coast to coast motorcycle ride raising money for the rescue helicopter.
Last time I went one guy got killed.

How about a charity tiddly-winks contest instead?

She's a friend of my wife. She's in an induced coma and lucky to be alive. They didn't think she was going to make it to the hospital. Two nurses (one of them an intensive care nurse) and a doctor were in the bunch, which is probably why she survived. As far as I am aware, head injury only, no other damage. Recovery is going to take a long time.
Apparently the accident was caused by some one ahead of her reaching for a water bottle in a big bunch at high speed.

Ouch. That is the last thing you want to happen at any time let alone on a charity ride for the hospital. I don't know what to say in these situations, but be there for your wife dude, and for her too. They'll both need it.
