Cyclist In Search Of Company

Postby ejones81 on Wed 21/Jan/09 12:58pm

I'm looking to add a bit more variety to my training outside of the shop rides, but would much prefer to ride with other people rather than on my own. I'd be looking to do about 50-100k and happy to travel to try new routes. For info - my taupo time was 5.09 and k1 3.21.

For those that think this looks familar, this follows my previous plea posted a few days ago, which I posted in the wrong place. I'm still a newbie to the site and clearly not hot on technology!

Lets keep this going...what part of Auckland? What days? Time of day? Distance? Speed?
Personality type?

Mission Bay. A weekend day is preferable as I work Mon-Fri. But I can do mornings before work. Don't mind what time (would avoid mid day this time of year though). Variable in distance - but I'm looking to do one 100k ride a week (which I could do as a shop ride with extension if this doesnt suit). As for speed, probably av 25k/h for longer rides. I've got a specialised ruby.

I think that got all the questions.

Ok, sensible hat on this time (it's the tweed one)...yeah, I'm in. I think us Auckland roadie vorbers need to make more contact actually out on the bikes.

I'm in Onehunga, handy for the old bridge to head out past the airport and over Clevedon / Hunua ways...

There is a bunch of us (between 3 and 16 on any given day....) that do a 40k route every Mon, Wed and Fri morning, going past Mission Bay around 6:15 am. The ride starts in Greenwoods Corner (near Royal Oak) at 5.30am, but several of the lads join on at various points along the way... So you could pick us up in St Heliers and do a circuit back to Mission Bay and be home in time for breakfast :)

Speed varies - the faster guys do taupo in under 4:30, some of us just under 5:00 and the rest around 5:15. The waterfront can get a bit willing with speeds reaching high 40's for most of the stretch. But we regroup in Parnell to let everyone catch up. Sometimes. :D

Weekends a few of us sometimes head out early (6.00am) to the Waitaks or Clevedon/Hunua.

Call me on 021-288-2850 if you want any more info.

Cheers,

Doug

I wished I could do some of those rides;
At this time of year I have no work so could ride at any time but there are no races so no incentive + having a binge working on our house does me in!

In the race season I usually have work and don't know what part of Auckland I'll be in until the morning of the day so have to take my bike in my car and train after work.

Those rides are definitely worth knowing about... thanks. Where abouts does the route go from after Mission Bay - I'm still a little rusty with my geography and don't trust myself to find my way back.

You guys are eager beavers, meeting up at 5.30am... just getting up at that time on a tues/thurs is hard enough.

I've just got back from Taranaki, I recommend the race to anyone. It was great fun and has brilliant spot prizes - almost makes the entry worth while. I didn't win anything though. But I did come 2nd in my group, woo! :)

From Mission Bay we head around the waterfront to the Strand, then up Gladstone, down through Newmarket, and up Remuera Rd. From there some split off for Onehunga, the rest go along Remuera Rd and either down to Lunn Ave and back to the waterfront via Panmure, Glen Innes & Riddell Rd, or just straight down St Heliers Bay Rd.

Hope that helps!

The secret to Auckland navigation is to recognise the volcanos - once you know Mts Eden, Albert, Roskill and Wellington and add in the Sky Tower you can fix your position
