okay - I have a set of cranks on my jump bike and something is bent. I have a spare set of Saint cranks - do any firms do chainrings that are 4 bolt micro drive compatible (25T running BMX chain)? Also, which firms do the lowest profile bash guard? Thanks :)

My better half recently bought herself a do up project (which really means my project) a 1950's BSA safety shopper R9.
On the bright side the bike is all there an mostly in not too bad condition, on the down side it appears that it has been sitting outside (in a garden?) at some stage as there was some dried grass in the wheels which have rusted beyond using.
I haven't been able so far to find any replacement rims, they are Westwood pattern 24" x 1 3/8.
My searching of the internet has found that they appear to be still made (in India and Japan...) but have found nobody who sells them, understandable due to approx zero demand.
Figure my bast chance is to get some 2nd hand ones but the only ones found so far were on a perfectly good bike, so if anybody out there knows of any could you point me towards them.

what part of the country are you in?

if you're in CHCH, or making a trip here anytime soon, come see me at Around Again Cycles
i have a bit of retro stuff upstairs, wheels, cranks, bars/stems etc...

Unfortunatly in "the Tron", so abit far to go.
@ Musta Tyres are still avaliable have a LBS here which has some in stock, the rims are too rusted to restore there are sections of both rims which have completely rusted away.
Have thought about a modern retro looking rim but the bike has rod brakes which need the westwood rim
Just need to find a wheel chair to hijack then....

Going have to buy overseas unless you can find some here in NZ.
Rod brake rims are super hard to find, was on a unsuccessful mission to find some last year in 28" size.

From what I have been told the Schwinn bikes importer (can't remember who) has a stock ot 28" westwoods as one of the schwinn's has them although havn't bothered to look what model.
Might have to get some from offshore, just need to find who has them in stock, can get complete 28' wheels new from the UK for 35pounds or likely even cheeper in India as there is any number of shops there full of them as the still make the old roadsters by the thousands.

Works out to be about $90 for the whole bike

Is the end cap that goes in the non-drive side Shimano crank available as a spare/ (see pic)

Seven years off-road riding and commuting worth of bottom bracket replacements has worn the threads on mine to the 'don't wanna go in there no more' stage. Mad amateur mechanicing skills have prolly contributed.

Try Mamachari in Wellington, they do up old commuter / shopping bikes and source a lot of stuff from Japan.

once the cincher bolts on those cranks are tightened, is that end cap actually necessary??

not really - it's primarily to set preload. And as a mate found out painfully, if the cinch bolts do come loose, the plastic preload thingy will do NOTHING to retain the crank (it just broke, followed shortly after by him eating crap with an entire NDS xt crank and eggbeater pedal still attached to his shoe)

maybe those metal preloaders would at least stop that (though there's a good chance the thread would give way if the preloader didn't fail)

Previous bb change I battled with the worn threads on the plastic cap before going Meh.

Crank fell off twice while commuting. First time I figured maybe I hadn't toightened it enough.

After the second time a day later I persevered to get the cap in. The crank has stayed there a few months longer than the life of the bb.

Witchcraft. That all I've got.
