Building L E D Night Lights

Postby jeremyb on Wed 28/Feb/07 1:28pm

I'm building my new lights with a triple Cree in it, 240 lumens and 6.6 hours on a 2000Ah NiMh pack made from 10xAA's

Me too. Cheapest source for Cree XR-E's I have found, FYI, is DealExtreme: http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.1302

(note that price *includes* shipping)

Optics: I plan to get from Cutter in Aus; Driver boards from TaskLED - either nflex, bflex or ??? (pricey but oh-so-configurable).

http://www.taskled.com/bflex.html

if you haven't ordered your supplies already Jeremy, I'd be keen to share postage.

Danose found these on ebay, already in a MR16 holder so a straight swap for those of us who are coming from 50mm halogens:

Already ordered unfortunately!

Charger: (works on 110-240V automatically, just need a new IEC power cord for it, same as computer or kettle)

Batteries:

Bought two batteries so one for Caidee as well :)

Saw the eBay ones - 30 degree beams is a little too much spread for offroading IMHO. Also no flexibility for dimming etc. But keen to see how you go.

I already have AA batteries galore (2500mAh+) - eBay great for those. Now to just chuck them together...

Smart charger is a good link - ta!

Didn't notice the 30deg bit, Danose has a backup plan to hopefully get ~500 lumens :satan:

500 lumens very achievable (especially with 3 x). But this will require driving at 1A and will thus require good cooling...

I am planning on hitting 550 lumens through driving three Cree's at 1A. From what I read pegging them back to 50-75% power is still mental amounts of light, thus the attraction to a good dimming circuit. My spreadsheet for this is below

(Battery life takes into account NiMH discharge curves at various A rates - 10 x 1.2V 2500mAh batteries)

(Driver circuit is >85% efficient)

 this was an interesting thread, then it went all geeky on us ;)

I have the Nightlightning Blaast - very happy with it. I
'd be able to do a light/beam comparison with these Ayup ones if anyone is keen.

ssshhh - the plan was to not tell JB about that to later, it was going to be part of his training ("and if you ride too slow, your head catches fire" :satan: )

try emailing eric at nightlghtning - he's happy to sell parts to diy'ers - so you could use the funky aluminium finned housing for the endurenz (which would give plenty of cooling)

they are 3x1W Sad

Yes, but that is at 350mA - drive them at 3 times that (this is sanctioned by Cree BTW, under the right conditions) and you have 3 x 3W LEDs...

Ta for suggestion - will see what they can do re: dimming circuits. Keen to make the housing myself however - work on a site with a substantial workshop, CNC rigs everywhere. Reinventing the wheel has never been so much fun :P

so am i right in thinking then

to get Endurance DCM made up is $319 each?
then add in the ONE battery and charger $258
and an in car adaptor $36
and a handle bar mount $18.95
and helmet adaptor $8.95

wow, pricey!
