Wrc Rally In Trouble For 2006

Postby Fraser on Wed 28/Dec/05 4:52am

It's all a bit sad at the WRC. The problem that they have is that Mitsi out until 2008, Citroen is out as they are taking a year off to develop the C4, Peugeot is heading to LeMans and Skoda are pulling factory backing.
So this leaves Subaru and Ford as factory backed entries. This leaves the WRC with a bit of an empty stage. It's a bit difficult to get sponsors when there are only 4 factory cars and local entries. Monte Carlo starts on the 26th of Jan...
It's going to end up like the F1 GP 2005 Indy race

Isn't Loeb entering a private Citroen team. With backing from Citroen?

Wonder if Audi will return, Alfa, BMW, Austin (mini)

Happens all the time when manufacturers decide they aren’t getting the return in sales they want from the motor racing dollar.

A couple drop out because they are not getting results, or they have won and there is nothing left to prove. Then others follow because winning against privateers doesn't prove much.

British touring cars has dwindled to only a couple of manufacturers after the heady days of Alfa Romeo, Vauxhall, Honda, BMW, Volvo, Renault, Ford, Audi all banging doors and losing bumpers.

IRL is about to implode with manufactures withdrawing from bank rolling their own engines or paying someone else’s engineers develop engines and putting their name on the cam covers.

DTM (German Touring cars) is likely to have only two manufacturers turn up on the grid in ‘06

Prototype sports cars (Le Mans etc) used to have Ferrari, Ford, Porsche Alfa Romeo consistently running at the front. Jaguar, Mercedes, Mazda, Toyota have all been racing at he sharp end. Now the front of the grid is mainly Audi several years old R8, with the real battles in the 'lesser' classes between 'factory' teams with cars developed by indpendants like Prodrive.

Sadly, there doesn't seem to be a solution to have good racing in a fomula that allows manufactures to showcase their engineering skill & technology, and still have sustainable (affordable) private teams being there or there abouts.

Close motor racing is destined to be confined to one make series and hghly regulated series.

It's kinda like how Skylines used to race in the Aussie Taxi series I guess.
Oh well - maybe it'll get down to a 2 horse race...

I don't think all hope is lost - what they need are either well though out formulas (like formula ford) that inherently limited unfair advantage, or multi-class races (like the old format Bathurst). Watching 'Godzilla' mothering Carollas or battling with V8's made for good racing all through the field. Likewise Formula Ford still has some of the closest racing. The problem seems to be that each manufacturer wants to dominate a single class, rather than being competitive in two or three. All just part of a marketing exercise, I suppose, but they needn't be mutually exclusive ideals...

There is a solution and it's been around for a 100 years.

Two wheeled motor sport! On road or off, it is so much better than car racing of any kind!
