another protip: when asking for a second hand axle, specify whether it's 15mm/20mm/15x110mm boost/plus/enduro/pinchbolt/qr :p

I'm there fairly regularly, i'll keep a look out.

Because, if used properly, they were captive in the hub, something thru-axles are not.
One should be in a habit of putting them back into the fork.

We didn't lose QRs but we did hate them for making our forks rubbish.

This is true.
Being lost means we wanted them back.

I can see the marketing guys in the marketing meeting in 2008.....

"You mean you have to remove these completely to take the wheel off, people aren't people gonna hate that?"
"Yeh, but they are so much better than QR, they will live with it"
"After the hype has died down, how can we make even more money from this new fangled system"
"Peeps will loose the axles, we can charge $US100 bucks for part that costs $US2 to make"
"They won't pay it"
"They won't have a choice - we will make a new standard every year, no third party will be able to keep up and the shops won;t be able to stock every possible axle. The poor sods that loose them will have to special order from us or buy a new Fork..... hahahah....., besides, Cycling is the new golf, finding the cash is not a problem for them...."
"ha... Great, hey - this weeks beers are on me, keep up the fantastic work, can't wait till I here what you have for us next month, can you come up with a cheap part that needs a really expensive special tool to replace...."

What about the 9mm bolt up ones like the DT Swiss and Specialized that fit into standard QR dropouts? Are they well on the way to the stiffness of a 15mm through axle with the benefits of not having to be removed each time you take the wheel off? Or the worst of both worlds, still flexy and more faff than a standard QR?

If it makes you feel better I heard a story of a couple of guys who got dropped off at the top of an epic heli-bike downhill, chopper flies away, they start putting their wheels on after taking the bikes etc out of the tray on the skids, one suddenly realises he's left his axles back at the base. Mate rides away, he stashes his bike and walks out, has to get the bike brought back out the next time the chopper takes a group in.
