What New Jacket?

Postby dwgknz on Mon 8/Aug/16 10:50am

I'm in the market for a new cycling outer shell.

Want it to be close fitting, breathable, bright and have plenty of light reflective material but doesn't need to be hi-vis. A bit thicker than a simple shell (got a Kathmandu one that works a treat).

Anyone got any suggestions about a good place to start.....

That's what I'm thinking but which one?

Been watching the people on my train in the morning and heaps wear ground effect at this time of year.

I'm pretty happy with my ground effect softshell mofo. Can't remember what they call it but it ticks your boxes. I find the fully waterproof ones to be overkill most of the time - water repellent, lightweight, breathable and comfortable are more important. I use my one for year round commuting in dunedin in old kinds of nasty weather.

Depends what you want.
anti-Cyclone is seam sealed, has a hood and has chest and arm vents
Storm Trooper is seam sealed, has a hood but no vents
Flash Gordon isn't seam sealed, doesn't have a hood but has zip-off sleeves

i got one of these years ago, and it's still going pretty good. For a $60 jacket, you actually cant beat it...

But otherwise, i'd be all Ground Effect too. my old model (pre zip off sleeves) Flash Gordon is still going strong.

Use mine heaps, but only slows down drizzle, and won't do shit to proper rain.
Great for cold wind.

Thinking the Storm Trooper, will do some family crowd sourcing for my birthday!

Anyone had a hydrofoil fabric jacket for long time? How long did it stay waterproof for and do they respond well to rewaterproofing? I've got nikwax tech wash and spray and had some success on my boarding jacket

Really like my Flash Gordon but dont do a lot of riding in the rain. Find I wear it more than half the time as a vest combined with arm warmers.

Personally, I favour the (Winter version) Zhongshan. I had one back in the 1970's. Not very waterproof, but robust, and cuts a mean figure...

Thank you, Chairman Mao.

True, the OP hasn't clarified what genre of riding the jacket is for.
Road?
Tweed?
#enduro?
XC?
Recumbent?

It's for general cycling duties, trail riding and comuting.

For formal rides I'd consider the Brooks Blackwell or Criterion over the Zhongsan.

The ability to pull off a rain cape is aspirational.

I require further sartorial advice.

What's a workable order for layering with base layers with baggies and inners?

Been cold last two days so I've worn polyprop long johns (purchased in the 90's and stripy as they should be). Wore them inside the liners today and ended up with chafing. But if I wear them outside the liners and under the baggies it would be all awkwardly fitting.

Liners - knee warmers - knee pads - long socks - shorter warm socks. Baggies over the top, at least 50mm overlap between baggies and pads.

Colour matched or clashing at your discretion.
