Motutapu/rangitoto Dual

Postby adikt on Fri 13/Nov/15 3:16pm

Has anyone done this before?
Entering next year, and wondering how hard it is on bike tyres?
Im guessing since it's on lava rock (which from my vague memories of last time I was on rangi are quite sharp) the race is likely to chew through rubber pretty quickly.

For anyone who has done it - recommend going tubeless for this one? Or better of just taking some spare tubes & tyres?

Done it (years ago so the course may have changed). The Rangitoto part is all on gravel/scoria type roads. I dont recall ever having any concerns for my tyres.

I've always wondered about this race and Motatapu. (Are they really Motutapu and Motatapu?) My concern is it looks like both are predominantly on roads or across fields, with minimal singletrack. Are either good fun?

the track is surprisingly good,
mix of fast farm road, scoria 4wd up Rangi, big fast tech dh, farm trail and grass to the north point : grade 2+
unique all round;
views to takapuna on the dh are pretty great,
lovely pohutukawa volcanic flat section on south Rangi

Not bad, my 'i've just come off injury, would be really cool if i got' goal of 3hrs got missed by 41seconds!!@#@ That pissed me off.

Strava told me one of the vorb crew got KoM for (I think) the 26km race?

Was a nice leisurely morning ride though, apart from the horrific grinding hills >36km mark. They sucked.
And the headwind up the hills, with the crosswind along the ridges. Also towards the end.

But good fun, will probably give it a proper crack next year, might even put in some training, or at least ride to work the week before :lol:
