10 will run on anything 7 will. And likely better.

But it wont upgrade a 32bit install.

You mean it installs the 32 bit Win 10? That's fine by me, I'm stuck with 4GB anyway.

The laptop has eSATA and will get a HDD adaptor for the optical bay, so there's no reason to upgrade except for USB3 and playing some big blu-ray rip torrents. But TPPA will require GCSB to hack into my laptop and delete all my unlicensed movies & music, so that won't matter any more.

But 32bit can't really read 4GB anyway... have you seen what your OS reports as Usable memory?

Anyway, that is what I'd do. All easy really. But if you prefer in-place, then go for gold too

just make sure you've got an image backup of your current OS first, in theory doing the upgrade off dvd it's MEANT to see the existing win7/8 install and upgrade, but worse case you will end up with a nice clean win10 install and it asking for a product key to activate

Does it have a proper slick new interface throughout, or is the slickness just sticky-taped on top like Windows 8?

They just put a little bit of windows 7 back in to 8.1 as far as usability goes.

I don't like the flat look that 8/10 has. Windows don't have the illusion that they're spatially separated and I get lost in the interface.
