Bar Tape Wrapping; Top Down Or Bottom Up?

Postby Farm on Sun 12/Jul/15 1:33pm

I've decided to wrap my own bar tape. It's the sort of job I'd normally get someone else to do because it doesn't really play to my strengths.
I'm rip shit and bust and this appears to be a perfectionist type job.
I did some prep though by watching YouTube videos and there seems to be two schools of thought regarding direction to wrap.
Start at the bottom or start at the top?

(This may be irrelevant as it's highly likely I'll rage quit with a big wadded up ball of tape and naked bars)

Imagining the tape is actually pie pastry might help you focus.

I always thought it a top to bottom task, overlap tge top with the bar plugs holding the bottom end in.

I'd always read bottom up, so the overlap was facing down, and the tape wouldn't roll up or anything.

I can't see how it matters too much.
Just remember to try wrapping it without taking the backing off the sticky bit first for a bit of practice.

I wrap top down, I absolutely totally completely without a doubt can not stand that horrible tacky poorly presented bar tape end thingy that gets applied as an after thought when you go bottom up ... just saying :p

I went bottom up. Left a bit of a lump at the top where I doubled it over. The argument for bottom up not rolling down on the edges seemed reasonable.

I did a better job than I'd imagined, hopefully it'll stay tidy.

Another couple of attempts and I'll be a gun.

Bottom up, if you cut the end on a proper angle it won't lump up

Yeah OP, tape bottom up, it's to stop the tape rolling over when you hold the bars above the hoods (your body weight tries to force your hands to slip down over the lip rolling it over). Just keep lots of tension on the tape to help prevent unraveling. And as Wachy said, if the end of the roll is cut on an angle you'll have a flush finish too. Oh, and don't use the poxy finishing tape supplied with your new tape, a good quality insulation is the go.
