World Hour Record

Postby mfw on Mon 9/Feb/15 6:26pm

OK so Rohan Dennis rode 52.491km yesterday, a new record following closely after Matthias Brändle, Jack Bobridge (failed) and Jens Voigt who re-ignited the 1 hour record.

Got me thinking:

=} Could a strong local rider create a cycling coup by using the mysterious power of the Coriolis effect (effect that makes the water flow anti clockwise down the plug hole for us), since all hour record attempts have been in a northern hemisphere velodrome riding anticlockwise, working against this dark but powerful force
=} Who is going to give it a try?
=} Should Brad Wiggins be worried?
=} Should I get Brian Cookson to book his ticket now to come and do the timing?
=} Has anyone got a 58 tooth chainring kicking around (Rohan used 56x14)?

*Like*
He probably already knows the 'local' venue, Trafalgar park, Nelson, nice concrete oval with only a couple of drains to dodge and a heady 5 degree of banking LOL

Thomas Dekker is having a Crack tomorrow morning NZ time. The difference with this one is he is doing it at altitude in Mexico, so will be interesting to see if it pays off for him.

Live stream should be on the UCI youtube page - https://www.youtube.com/user/ucichannel/featured
info:http://www.uci.ch/pressreleases/uci-hour-record-dekker-ready-take-the-challenge/

Should be about 7am tomorrow morning if my calculations are correct

52.221
He looked too fresh walking around afterwards!

TV footage was a bit poor, in this day and age we expect info-graphics!

I know right? Even online cycling forums have fancy graphical representations

I clicked on the video link just in time to watch a dejected rider doing a few cool down laps with no indication of whether he was successful or, if not, how much he missed by

I felt pretty sorry for the commentators, They didn't have a lot to commentate on.

I did like the quip about the gun will sound soon and it'll be the graphics guy falling to the ground.

I was at the DISC velodrome when Jack Bobridge made his attempt (too fast, too early). The hour went surprisingly fast (although I understand it was 60 minutes), and the capacity crowd was revved up throughout. He was definitely not walking round refreshed at the end (unlike how it sounds like Thomas Dekker was) - He was 110% fubarred, to the extent that they had to take the wheels off the bike and drop the frame out from under Jack, while they held him up.

The whole thing looked more painful than childbirth.
