Lyttelton Urban Down Hill This Weekend

Postby Melissa_Theuriau on Wed 19/Nov/14 9:34am

The concept for Urban Down Hill Racing began with the Red Bull Urban Down Hill in Brazil. There are now several Urban Down Hill races in the world every year. The Red Bull Urban event has had 365,000 You Tube views to date.

The Lyttelton Urban Down Hill Event runs anually on a course from Somes Rd to London St, a distance of 1.2 Km with a 160m vertical drop. With over 3000 spectators, Talented international riders and great hospitality from the Lyttelton Community the event was a huge success.

Event organisers, The Huxster Mountain Bike Trust has a long term vision for this event, to make it an annual celebration of community and fun. We see this event as a message to the wider public that Lyttelton, New Zealand is open for business.

The Schedule for the November 2014 event includes two days this year. We kick off on Saturday Afternoon the 22nd November with a Big Air Dirt Jump Festival and finish on Sunday Evening the 23rd of November with the much loved Lyttelton Urban Down Hill.
Rain dates will be one week later on the 29th and 30th November.

Starting at 5pm on Saturday and finishing at 8pm, the atmosphere will be like a street party, promising spectacular entertainment and delicious food, this summer evening will be a memorable one.

We were inspired by this photo of the Vienna AIR King event, (they still have old buildings) The Premier Sponsor for the Big Air Dirt Event will be announced in August. It will be a Canterbury Demolition and Excavation Company who knows how to support the communities that need a lift. Dirt Jump Riders will be invited from NZ and Australia to compete for a total of $3000 prize money.

The Lyttelton Urban Down Hill will start with a practice session from 10am -12pm on Sunday the 23rd followed by a final for the Open and Junior Men from 1-3pm. This year we will have a invitational Pro Elite Event following the Local riders finishing at 3pm. There will Professional World Cup Down Hill and World Tour Urban Riders Practicing and Competing from 3:30 -6:30 with our London Street Finish at 6:30.

This Event is a non- profit event run by a local mountain bike trust. We do not charge an entry fee but we do welcome volunteers and donations. Please visit our donation page to see how you can get an event tee shirt by donating $50 or more toward the running of this event.

He's actually riding on wood and some people prefer the feel of no gloves.
