On my outdated mtb with 9mm q/r front wheel I run the lever on the right, as I find it's too fiddly clamping it on the left with the brake caliper and rotor to deal with. I don't think there's a law though, just do what you like and what works.

Come on Oli, you know left is the law. Aren't you a card-carrying Velominati member and everything? I have no issues with mine on the left of a disc brake CX bike, apart from the fact I can't put it in it's correct position of just aft of the fork leg.

On my way of the future 66c bike with easy relinquish forks I wear it to the left. The light side. I believe the right shows sith tendencies?

Firstly
=} http://www.velominati.com/the-rules/#41

but it doesn't actually clarify the side, so mfw rule 41 annex:
=} Rear lever shall be on the opposite side to dérailleur, i.e. on left
=} Front must be on the same side as rear

Surely they mean just fore of the fork leg, near or actually vertical? Just aft would put it on a stupid looking angle.

Its only on the left from the cockpit. Viewed from the perspective of a pedestrian about to be steamrolled person looking head on at said bicycle, it's the other way around.

The side that doesn't burn your hands against the disc rotor.
