Help - Bike Mechanic Has Reversed My Bb Threads

Postby Sims on Thu 6/Nov/14 9:55pm

Just had my frame repainted and got the local bike shop to chase the BB threads to clean out a little bit of over spray. Get the frame back home to discover that the BB cups won't screw in. So i swap them around to the wrong sides and they screw in perfectly with just finger tip pressure.

So the BB bolts up perfectly on opposite sides... This would be fine, but my truvatic crankset is stepped. The drive side bearing 24mm, and the non drive is 22mm. So it definitely only goes in one way.

How is this even possible. What sort of monkey fisted retard would forced a new thread in backwards.
Am i missing something. Or do i stamp my feet and demand some new shit.

Gah.

Surely you's missing something.
Unless they monkeyed it right up, monged the threads, and had to helicoil them, then monged that too by doing it backwards :D

Did you do any diddling around with the BB/crankset while it was out? Take it apart and put it back together in some backwards manner?

I don't see how i can be missing something. Its only going to thread in only way. And the cranks only through one way.
What can i be missing?

Oh and it took them 7days too

Actually some people put their bolts in alternative holes. And that's OK.

Think back to when you took it apart - are you trying to put it back together exactly as it came apart?
And look up the service manual for your crankset/BB 'cos it might have the installation instructions. May have the answer you are seeking.

What do the threads look like? if they ran a left tap through a right thread and a right through a left there will be basically nothing left.

Well either you've changed something on your end, or they must have screwed something up big, and needed to secretly fix their booboo with a threaded insert. Then they fucked the fix up.

The threads look fine... But the drive side BB cup (as labelled drive-side), will not screw into the drive side.

I did however only give them a single piece of the full suspension frame that housed the BB... So lacking a complete frame as a fucking road map, maybe confusion ensued...

I've seen this done before - as AgrAde says if they've done that the damage should be obvious, but not necessarily.

Babs, the whole threaded insert thing is barking up the wrong tree, and Sims will know which side of a bike the cranks go on. ;)

I'd take it back and make a LOT of noise about it. This is not good.

Presumably they are the same cups that came out of the bike before it was repainted - they can't suddenly be relabelled! It's quite simple, the frame has been reverse re-threaded, and the shop has a lot to answer for.

Yep - 24mm on drive side, and 22mm on non drive. Axle is stepped and only goes in one way.
