What's An Electrolyte?

Postby Scotty on Sun 28/Sep/14 3:39pm

Inspired by an earlier conversation... Seriously, we've all been told they're good for us, but what are they exactly? What do they do?

"a substance that ionizes when dissolved in suitable solvents"
Probably something you find in Macca's food :paranoid:

No, Maccas salt would be processed from the residues of chemical weapons manufacture.

You need a good blood PH and they conduct electricity. Sodium and Potassium are the good for this and the fancy drinks contain colouring is there to make you feel you are getting something tangible for you money. Punters make homemade versions of this as they think that they can do better, but if you have ever tasted salt water it is quite horrible.

What is the best source of natural Potassium for its weight/volume? White beans. ;) You will be happy to know that there is a product on the market that solves this problem and thankfully for what you need to use it for it is high in Sodium too. It's only issue is that it isn't nice cold..

Unfortunately I know there will be some roadie blending this cold with their homemade electrolyte drink for round Taupo.

The little sausages in the baked beans/spaghetti are pretty fucking great.

So instead of spending $4 on the likes of Brawndo, I can buy a can off baked beans and smash a couple of bananas with water instead?

WIN!

I thought some of the point of electrolyte water was that it aided water absorption in the stomach?

Electrolytes are things that make you thirsty. This enables you to drink an entire 750ml powerade instead of the 200ml of water you actually need.

I think that's mostly marketing. It MIGHT make it a more controlled/gentle sort of absorption for the cell-based absorbing, but for the osmotic gradient it'll make it absorb slower. I certainly never drink a water and then freak out that it's not absorbing fast enough :D

The advantage (if there is one) of sports drinks is the sodium replaces some of the sodium that you've lost. And that the nice taste makes it easier to drink. And that the sugary ones give you some energy.
