Cool Apps

Postby lubie on Wed 23/Apr/14 3:52pm

Having recently acquired a smart phone, I'm intrigued with apps and cool ones that have a use (rather than a time wasting game).
I'm partial to the XE currancy converter, my bank's app, Mojo's app and also the Air NZ app.

What's a cool and useful app that you are currently fond of?

Flashlight :)

And, the Snapper app is handy to load up the kids' snapper cards. Phone needs NFC for that.

IMDB for help at the DVD store...

+1 for the Air Nerw Zealand app - it rules the ocean waves (or should that be the skies?)

Sky TV app is awesome - tell your MySky to record stuff while you're not even in the house.
Their GoSky app is ok too - lets you watch some Sky content on your mobile device if you're into that.

I use The Ultimate Guitar Tab app quite a bit, super handy with its auto scroll feature - means you can play without needing to swipe the screen to follow the tab.

Kindle app is cool - links your bookmarks across devices, so if you are stuck on a train somewhere and want to read a book thats on your kindle, it knows where you're up to on that device and takes you to the right page!

If you're on iOS, the Apple remote app is awesome. Control your itunes library (on your PC) from your phone (while connected to the same Wifi network). And with a couple of Airport Expresses you can then stream music direct frpom there to multiple locations simultaneously. Its like an expensive multi room home theatre setup for about $100.

And on a similar note Plex media server lets you do a similar thing, stream movies from your PC direct to an Apple TV (ie gets around the need to re-encode to silly iTunes compatible formats).

Flipboard for news
Pandora for music
BNZ for banking
Strava to remember where and when I rode, cause I ride slowly round in circles anyway.
Shazam is handy too

Worst app ever is 2048 and I hate the fact I got curious when it was mentioned on here!
