Cross Discs Brakes - Which Ones?

Postby great uncle bulgaria on Sat 12/Apr/14 4:59pm

For the purposes to which I will put my new love bike I've decided that mechanical discs are the way to go.
Servicibility on the hoof being the main advantage.
What Mechanical disc do the Cognoscenti recommend?
I was thinking BB7 Avids
(yeah I know, but the mechanical ones do appear to have a good rep as far as I can tell and previous mechanical avids Ive had were fine . . . .)
any advice peoples?
thanks

BB7's and powerlinks - the only 2 good things SRAM make! The Shimano CX77 caliper is however narrower and less likly to bite your ankle if the rear brake is inside the rear triangle.

Have a look at the TRP Spyre - dual cam caliper, as apposed to almost everything else that only pulls 1 caliper into the other.

Shimano CX77. I like mine very much. Heaps of power, very easy to set up, great lever feel (I have mine paired with 105 levers)

excellent options
Cr77s seem difficult to buy (in nz online at least)
BB7s abundant and cheap it seems

what size rotors are y'all running?

I bought my CX77's in NZ, but right now the Shimano importer is only showing one in stock, they had a decent number when I ordered mine, might be worth your while to get your LBS to give Sheppards a call and ask when they are getting more. I am running 160F/160R, with 160R I find it quite easy to lock the rear wheel, but I also like doing skids so doesn't worry me too much. I weigh a bit under 80KG and it's more than enough power with 160/160, even 160/140 would be more than enough with more manageable rear braking I am sure.

BB7's are all good though, only Avid brake I would put on my bike. IMO CX77's have more power and a BB7-road though.

I've had zero issues with my BB7s since I got them about 18 months ago. They've done CX, daily commuting, and a brevette with no issues at all and strangely I haven't needed to change pads yet either!
