Tour Aotearoa - Cape Reinga To Bluff By Bike - 3000km Brevet

We might as well start a new thread eh?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
In Feb-March 2016, Jonathan Kennett will be running Tour Aotearoa - a 3000 km brevet from Cape Reinga to Bluff. It will follow a similar route to the one described at the back of Classic New Zealand Cycle Trails. The route will be updated at the end of next year to include several sections of new cycle trails that are currently being constructed.

This length-of-New-Zealand brevet will be organised along the same lines as the Kiwi Brevet, and will probably be a one-off event (who would be crazy enough to do this ride twice?). No entry fees, no prizes, just an unforgettable ride that will take from 15 to 30 days.

Tour Aotearoa will also have two brevette options: the North Island section and the South Island section (both around 1500 km long).

Its early days yet, but people wanting more information can contact http://touraotearoa.blogspot.co.nz/p/blog-page.html Jonathon Kennett .

I bought a new bike today so I can have a go at this.
I'm starting to get quite excited and it's still nearly two years away.
There are a people few talking about it on http://www.bikepacking.net/forum/index. ... 316.0.html

Sounds kinda cool, espcially at only 100kms a day. But there is no way that I could get a month off work in February / March

Me too! What bike did you get Noel? Not that you need a specialist bike. All bikes are good at one part or another anyway : )

I had looked at another couple of bikes but they had very small front triangles.
I wanted something with plenty of room so it can carry a frame bag with a 3l water bladder.

From what I'm hearing this event might attract quite a few overseas riders - the 'From one end of New Zealand to the other' thing obvioulsy comes with some good bragging rights, but it'll be hard for some of them to get fit coming out of an Northern Hemisphere winter. Still, I suppose we do that sort of thing farily regulalry when on our way to big races on the other side of the globe. Endurance takes a long time to lose.

Jonathan checked out the new cycle paths in Auckland recnetly and was very impressed. I think we can expect to skip the dog-leg from Auckland over to the Coromandel Peninsula (shown in Classic NZ Cycle Trails) in favour of something more direct between Auckalnd and Thames.

Very nice route...very nice indeed. But also very time-consuming, especially if you're unlucky with your timing and miss the last ferry of the day (possibly more than once).

Getting through Auckland might not be all that bad.....riders will be entering from SH16 and could take the back road through Massey then hook onto the NW Cycleway all the way to the city. Then meander around the waterfront, jump over the hill to Panmure, and do some back roads through to Clevedon. From there as Trance said its either the Hunua Traverse on the forest roads, or a great pedal around the Pohutukawa Coast road. This is a nice ride and would get riders through the city pretty quickly.
