Stupid Bike Questions

Postby Bigfoot on Sat 12/Oct/13 9:39am

Despite being on a site about bikes (FFS) for far too long, I think a thread for stupid questions is useful, or else it has been in other places. Without prejudice... except against Belgium.

How the hell do I measure my bottom bracket?

Shell? Width of the frame at BB shell should be 68, 73, or 83mm (83 is mostly DH)
Or spindle? running oldskool are we?

I'm assuming this isn't a new one with the BB spindle integrated in the driveside crank.

If the cranks are off, measure the total length by jamming it in a drawer then measuring the gap. You can do this with the BB in the bike, solo if it would disturb other occupants of the household. A pair of chopsticks used as a caliper is less fun.

You don't have to remove the cranks if you are cunning. Remove the crank bolts only. Make some kind of depth gauge to measure the depth of the BB ends. The outside of the crank is often not 90 deg to the axle, so measure in the middle.
Now measure the whole crankset by jamming it in a doorway. French doors with sharp corners make measurement easier.

Note that triple cranks, and pre-1989ish duals are often assymetrical - the drive side may be 1-9mm longer.

I lived without vernier calipers for decades. Not a smart thing to do.

This is a genuine stupid bike question. I admit that I am hopeless when it comes to biek fixory. Tell me why I can't seem to get my rear brake disc to stop rubbing. It's fine when I drop the wheel in but as soon as I tighten the qr it rubs on the brake pads.

What brakes?

Generally, you would fit the wheel, do up the qr, undo the two bolts that hold the calliper to the adaptor a couple of turns, pull the brake on, do them back up and it should all be centered.

Avids can be set up drag free, it just takes longer than Shimano.

Good brakes when they're good, extra bad when they're not.

I don't have a problem with any of the Avids I own. That is all :)
