The Best Piece Of Singletrack In Nz + Top 3?

Postby Trail on Sun 6/Oct/13 4:33pm

I know hidden away on here there is a thread where people have posted up their top 10 favourite mountain bike rides in NZ, but I want to know what your top 3 are, and of those which one is the most favourite, that you would ride every chance you get!

I think my favourites are
Wakamarina - Richmond Ranges - Marlborough - although the shuttle to get to each end is long the ride is a lot of fun.
Mt Fishtail - Richmond Ranges - Marlborough - long carry to get the bike up there, but sooo much fun on the way back down. Beats out Mt Starveall as the river bed bash on Starveall takes a little of the shine off it.

The winner for me is:
Mt Oxford - near Oxford - Canterbury. A super fun loop with a bit of everything that is only an hour away. Again a bit of bike carry, but the singletrack on the way down is sooo worth it.

So... how about you?

heh heh, I started that thread years ago, when there was a lot of negative stuff on Vorb, in an effort to get people talking about biking!

1. Nydia Bay
2. Mt Oxford
3. Peaking Ridge

Oh dear how south island centric :o

Somewhat tamer...

1. Rameka (only cos i do it every year that i'm up there)
2. Craigieburn (cos i dont do it often enough)
3. Wakamarina (tho, last time we did it it was hellish - walking up from Wakamarina end* is NOT FUN (ish :sly: )

* due to the road closure and lack of good alternative route signage...

My favourites are even tamer :D

My ultimate piece of singletrack was the original (talking 8/9 years ago) Be Rude Not To. It was my "flow" track. I'm still sad that it no longer exists :(

As for rides.....the Rameka is right up there followed by the Coppermine followed by Craigieburn (minus the Edge!). Not particularly adventurous but my physical limitations preclude me from really exploring the high country. Again, it's South Island dominated; back country options were few and far between when I lived in the North Island. I'm looking forward to trying out the Pureora Timber Trails in the not-too-distant though.

So.....there are better sections of singletrack than those listed below (Nelson, Chch, Q town, Wellington etcetc) but for me, a great ride = a LONG day in the saddle + awesome views + actually going somewhere + excellent single track. All the trails below are super easy to ride (Grade 2ish) but they are an amazing adventure so they make my top 3:

1. Pureora timber trail - 80ish km of great trail with a couple of small gravel sections.
2. Waikato River trail - 100ish km of scenic cruising with great views
3. W2K / Kawakawa super loop - do this as a figure 8 ride to make it an awesome 70kmish day out.

PS: should have mentioned I have ridden in the South, but havent done any all day epics (yet). Im sure my top 3 would change when I have ridden down there (eg Old Ghost Road).

Props also to my local Royal Albany Trails.

Nice. I was almost thinking of doing a poll to see if there was a firm favourite... but I think we might be too diverse for that to work very well? What do you guys think?

Over Cass saddle to Hamilton hut and back out the same way.
Maunganui in the Akatarawas to Maungakotukutuku Rd. I am happy to forgive the hour long bush-bash bike carry to get there.
Too many options to choose my number 3, but they all involve beech forest.
