Problem With New Bike

Postby kiwijules0505 on Thu 7/Feb/13 8:31am

Hi All,

I'm new to Vorb and just bought my first bike (since cycling to school as a kid) for commuting to work in Wellington.

The bike is a Trek Mamba and I've used it for a week now.

This morning I noticed that while pedalling, there seems to lateral movement at the bottom bracket. I stopped and confirmed this by wiggling the crank arm - there's definite movement.

I'm guessing this is not good, so will take the bike back this weekend. I just want to check the following:

Is it safe to cycle back home tonight?
Could there be other damage done due to the movement, e.g. damage to bearings?

Thanks for your help.

do both crank arms wiggle when you try to move them, or is it just the one side?

Hey KJ

take the bike to a shop at lunch time. Otherwise whatever is loose may get flogged out worse.

Sounds like it may be a loose crank arm, in which case it will take a mechanic about 30 seconds to fix.

If you continue to use your bike, and everything seizes up at a critical moment, you may have an accident involving injury.

A work acquaintance once ended up with broken arms after going over the bars, in Wgton CBD, from a similar situation.

Thanks for the comments guys. I will go and check whether it's justs the crank arm/s which is loose or the whole bottom bracket assembly.

I checked again at lunchtime and it's definately the whole assembly that's moving, i.e. not just one crank arm.

I guess it's back to the dealer this weekend for them to fix.

Thanks for your advice.
