2006 GT Avalanche frame, 2003 pace rc36 forks, american classic wheelset half inched off my sister, x9 type 2 1 x 10 draive train and a bunch of parts that were in the spares box. Weighs just under 10kg, rides beautifully, razor sharp in the tight stuff, slack enough for the steeps.

So Im really happy about this cool little hardtail that I have built up for my boy for his 7th birthday. He races BMX, but we also like to get to the Redwoods as often as we can, and he had been riding a 20" GT Stomper for the past year or so in the forest, but lately was looking like he had outgrown it. I had a real limited budget, and had a quick look at what was on offer in the way of new 24" wheeled mtb's for kids, but couldnt get inspired about anything the shops had to offer. I trawled trademe for about a month then happened upon this sweet little Scott Valtage JR24. There was 3 really good reasons I really liked this bike, the frame geo meant it had a really low standover, good because a 7yo is at the bottom end of the height range for 24" wheels, the fork is really useable, great preload adjustment meant we got good sag with him on it, and actually WORKS for kids, and thirdly, the frame and fork were disc ready, even if the wheels werent.
Next I started going through all my old mtb spares, a lot of which were not all that worn if Im honest, then I sourced a nice 2nd hand pair of disc-ready wheels off a Jump Bike through using the Vorb classifieds. Only problem was the rear hub was only singlespeed capable. So again trademe to the rescue, I found a 9sp, disc hub at a great rice and had my lbs build it into the wheel.
Heres the list of bits I upgraded/replaced:-
Phillips 2-bolt seatpost
Raceface oversize bars (cut down to suit)
Short stem
Wheelset
Mechanical disc brakes
Raceface bashguard
Sram 9sp cassette
Durace chain
X9 rear mech
LX front mech
X7 shifters
Shimano clip pedals

Its a really cool little go-anywhere, do-anything bike, and I have really enjoyed the build, nothing puts a smile on my face like seeing my boy loving riding his new bike though :)

Cheers. Yeah he rides clips full time on his BMX from next January, but would be riding them now if he was allowed (they see the older kids on clips and they want to do it too). I dont mind him on clips, definitely helps with power, and thats a good thing when it comes to crawling up the big hills.

For going from a 22 to a 32 i'd say it probably shifts pretty sweet. You gotta remember it has contours on its cage designed to help shift those gears at that set height. It only looks high because it's not sitting next to a 44/42
