New Year's Carnival - Oh What A Night

Postby Melissa_Theuriau on Sun 6/Jan/13 8:55am

OMG! What a freakin' awesome night of racing. Great crowd, with hundreds pouring through the gate to bear witness to sizzling displays of power and speed by some of our country's best track cycling talent.

The Open Women's racing was incredible. Despite strong challenges by 2010 Junior World silver medalist Elizabeth Steel, Oceania Champ Steph McKenzie and double Junior Worlds medalist Cassie Cameron – ex-pat Cantabrian Natasha Hansen was unstoppable. Hansen ended the night with line honours in all her races including the 1000m Scratch, The Keirin, Elimination and The 2000m Hornby W.M.C. Cup - not too shabby for a sprinter.

The Junior riders also put together some stunning rides as the likes of Olivia "Podium" Podmore displayed her domination in the U17 Girls winning all but one of her races despite some strong contesting by fellow Cantabrian Eden Ronald and 14 year-old Ashburton rider Isabella Smith. U17 Boys riders Lachie McGregor (Dunedin) and Rhys Jones were outstanding as they fought tooth and nail in the Junior feature race – The Dreamrides Wheel Race – with McGregor emerging victorious.

It all ended too soon, but not before hometown hero and 2013 Tour de Vineyards winner, The Vinkanator (Michael Vink) impressed us in the last race of the night, claiming a very credible 3rd behind exceptional rides by Archbold and Kennett in the Digital Fusion 8000m.

Chief Commisaire, Hamish Ferguson was in awe of the calibre of racing at the Denton Park Oval last night.

"Hats off to Natasha Hansen, Simon Van Velthooven, Eddie Dawkins, Marc Ryan and Shane Archbold, who are all truly World Class and delivered several fantastic moments to Canterbury Track Cycling History in particular 59.727 seconds for 1000m!"
— Hamish Ferguson

Our Olympic riders added some real class to the event, ripping up the track at a blistering pace. And with the grandstand red-stickered, shipping containers being used as storage facilities and Denton Park in desperate need of replacement, Canterbury Track Cycling showed that in the face of adversity great things can be done - what a spectacle!

With a second night of racing in store tonight Ferguson has a few requests "lets do it bigger, better and most importantly, faster!"
