are you going to rent a car?

having just dome a large chunk of the heaphy on the wet i would definitiely go collingwood ->>karamea even if doing a return trip (in which case, depending on how fast you ride, there may not be much left of a week. thought the last report was pretty good value. the guy in collingwood bike shop apparently will drive a vehicle for a reasonable fee. take spares - lots esp brake pads, derailleur hanger, good tyre boot or spare tyre, spare chain links and quicklinks ( we used all these) etc etc

shit lots of good riding around the area . . .

Just wondering, how often might you normally expect to use spares such as those listed above in your general riding?

Check out this info on the Nelson club site.

Also try Escape Adventures in Takaka for shuttle info. There is also a return flight option out of Karamea for a reasonable price.

Quiet Revolution http://www.quietrevolution.co.nz/ is the outfit you're after.

The guy who runs it is my partner's uncle - a scholar, gentleman, and all around decent bloke.

He's also the fount of all knowledge on the local trails.

At QB weekend we did Karamea to Brown Hut and back to Karamea over 3 days, about 15-16 hours ride time. Best way is definetly Brown Hut to Karamea. I went through a brand new set of (organic) pads between Perry Saddle and Lewis Hut  Mad chain suck along the coast on the way back, thanks to the muddy but awesome descent from James McKay. Fantastic trip.

Martin at QR has a good shop in Takaka. Escape do transport, bike hire, have freeload racks for hire etc. The guys @ Escape ride the track lots, guiding, relocates etc so a good source of up to date info. There's a bunch of transport operators but most are bus companies without good options for carrying bikes. Escape has a sweet bike trailer. You can get flights out of Karamea with GB Air for $200, good option compared with hours by bus, better still ride back.

I'm interesting in riding the Heaphy from the Karamea end on the last weekend of September. I'd be on my own, but for safety reasons I don't want to ride the track solo. Anyone interested in joining me?

I'd be flying into Westport on Thu 27 Sep and would ride up to Karamea. I've ridden the track before, Collingwood to the coast and back. I am experienced in back country survival stuff, and handy in an emergency.
