1st Monument - Milan - San Remo

Postby great uncle bulgaria on Fri 16/Mar/12 9:29pm

The 1st monument for the year and the longest race in the calendar
Tomorrow

298km - with a special dispensation for distance  .
No other UCI races are allowed to be this long.

No big climbs so a clever sprinter can survive. Ask Mark Cavendish

So long that team tactics can play a big part.

Whose it gonna be?
Spartacus was looking good in the Strada Bianche
Cavendish and Boagen -Hassen both won stages in the Tirreno-Adriatico.
And Nibali won Tirreno-Adriatico
Boonen was looking strong in Paris-Nice as was DeGent

What about last years winner Goss?

And what of last years Classics star Phillipe Gilbert?

Who Y'all backin??

Nice preview here

Throw Greipel into the mix...along with about 10 other names that could win. Hasn't been a solo winner for a while so perhaps the best descender around in Nibali could have a go.

Time for Cancellara to re-think his tactics?

Should he have sat up once he realised he couldn't drop Gerrans & Nibali and then maybe try to go again from about 2km?

He looked like he was unwilling to risk losing (ie slow up to force the other 2 to work) in order to win?

Nibali was not going to work, he had a team mate in chasing bunch.

and gerrans had goss behind him when the move was made.
seems cancellara would prefer a lottery for 1-2-3 than to be swallowed in a bunch.
shame though. super strong. 100% predictable now though
