Interesting. Whaka forest is tough to beat, but don't know if it's best suited to this format. Whaka's best feature is the sweet single-track, but an event of this nature needs more open stuff to make passing easier and better accommodate the vastly varying abilites of people riding on the same bit of trail.

And hey, who can complain about riding somewhere new?

the realization that the race has stopped being relevant among those who like to race for the sake of racing?
or something more awkward like a fall out with redwoods management?

what other crackpot theories can I/we come up with?

Maybe the new trails will be wider, which will be a bonus I suppose. no more lycra-clad roadies demanding that everyone pulls off the track to allow them through ZIS MINNIT!

But then there will be way less lycra-clad roadies trying to pass on narrow singletrack and failing EPICLY in a highly humorous fashion, what will people do for entertainment?!?!

I think you guys mean lycra clad mountain bikers...

I'm looking forward to seeing the new venue - it sounds right nice from support crew perspective ;)

30 bux for power on site sounds is cheaper than a generator hire ( so long as you have an RCD with the right plug on it )

I'm wondering if it will be an alcohol-free venue.
For the school camps they hold up there it is strictly a dry camp.

Info just received from Event Promotions:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi there
Can you please include an update on the Cateye Moonride in your next newsletter? We have had a change in venue however entry forms are printed with old details so we need to get the news out to everyone concerned. Details below, thanks!

Cateye Moonride – 12th May 2012

After 10 years being held in the Whakarewarewa Forest, New Zealand’s most iconic mountain bike event is changing venues. In 2012, the Cateye Moonride will be held at Tui Ridge Park, just north of Rotorua. The Cateye Moonride will follow the same concept and have the same electric atmosphere but will be bigger and better with awesome new trails and a great new camping experience. You will get to ride stunning mountain bike tracks through NZ native bush that cannot be normally ridden outside the event...which means a fair course for everyone! The loop will be approximately 8kms on grade 2 tracks.
The facility offers flushing toilets, hot showers, and powered tent sites, what more can you ask for!
Entries are open now, http://www.moonride.co.nz

I thought the course was terrible. It was poorly laid out and unnecessarily dangerous in places, I only did two laps before pulling the pin because the course was so bad (I know from experience what I would have felt like in +12 hours, let alone 24), I had three people crash right in front of me in that short time. I saved my energy and had a fantastic ride in Whakarewarewa instead. Who ever decided on the course should have known what was going to happen with that much traffic. I didn't pay $125 to enter a 24 hour duathlon, I can live with hard courses but that had no redeeming features.

Can't speak for the rest of the event as I didn't stay around long enough. However, we were supposed to have a powered site, which never happened. The marshalls clearly hadn't been briefed about campsite logistics when we arrived, maybe things got better as the day went on.

Very disappointed overall, will not be back while it is at that venue.
