2012 Tour De France - A Job Of Work

Postby Conners on Wed 1/Feb/12 9:37am

Right - with le tour not too far away ( ) I thought a new thread was in order.
To kick off the discussion, I will start with my latest blinding revelation:

The phrase ‘job of work’ has been the sauce of much pleasure for me when watching the TdF – largely because it makes absolutely no cents to me.
But then at the weekend while reading a book I stumbled upon the phrase ‘it was a job of work, not a labour of love’. All of a sudden, Phil/Paul’s (I can’t remember which one says it constantly) phrase made a whole lot more sense!

Is it just me who has been in the dark on this?
Am I completely uneducated?
Have I just ruined the mystique of the phrase?
Will le tour ever be the same again?
Does this thread need a pole?

Discuss.

[I await many  replies]

Good for you :)

The only way I'm familiar with the phrase is when describing someone who's a bit of a handful in dealing with. As in, "Phew, he's a job of work!". The sort of person who, when if there's an easy way of doing something, will choose another option...

Agree re. job of work, but as far as nonsensical statements go, Paul and Phil don't do too badly in comparison to other sports commentators.

Try David Coleman/ Murray Walker.....
