The 2012 Pokeno Wheels and Heels Cycling Challenge has an extended ride for cyclists wanting a greater challenge. The new course is an extension of the old 56km course, taking cyclists circuit over the Tuakau Bridge to the rural districts of Pukekawa and Onewhero.
Now in its 14th year this is a leading event on the cycling calendar for cyclists in theAuckland, Franklin and Waikato regions. On Sunday 11th March 2012 over 200 riders are expected to cycle one of two courses, the 70km Pro Cycle Challenge or the 32 km recreational Challenge. The event caters for cyclists of all abilities. The aim of the ride is to promote cycling as an enjoyable recreational activity as well a truly competitive sport for those who seek such challenges.
The 32 km Recreational Challenge follows and undulating out and back course following the Port Waikato Rd to Te Kohanga and back.
The event also runs a Bike Safe / Bike Wise programme for young children.
This event is attended by leading national cyclists and teams, notablyGordon MaCauley who has supported the event since 2005.
The event is a major fundraiser for Pokeno School and proceeds for the event go towards funding school community projects like the large shelter.
