Calendar Event: September 24, 2011

Moving Planet Nz

Postby julia350 on Tue 13/Sep/11 1:16pm

Moving Planet on September 24th is part of a worldwide rally to demand solutions to the climate crisis.

Come on bike, on skates, on a board, or just on foot to join in these events, OR start you own event. There are key events happening throughout the country - see here for the event map http://www.350.org.nz/movingplanet, but we would love to see more people organise cycle rides, walks, runs and more to join with these events.

In Wellington we are looking for group leaders to lead a ride from your suburb into a large gathering at Waitangi Park. See http://www.moving-planet.org/wellington for details on how join.

This is a day about having fun, promoting renewable transport options and getting some exercise! We would love to have members of VORB join us.

so the past 1000 or so years of "modern civilization" in which we have completely transformed this planet from somewhere green and balanced to what it now is good for it? Our influence is better than millennia of natural evolution?

Scientists have already come to the conclusion that the extreme events that have been happening round the world for the last year or two i.e. Quakes, hurricanes, volcanoes and the sort are accelerated versions of their prediction models and that what we're experiencing now is the worst case scenario of climate change.

Global Warming slowed down dramatically 10 years ago... Climate Change hasn't though.

Humans on the planet for a couple of million years industrial for 250 years.... climate records for 150 years.... not much of a snap shot for a climate which has been warming and cooling for 4.5 billion years...... the planet has been a lot hoter than it is now and also a lot cooler But that's not the point... we shouldn't be wasting resources anyway.

It's the rate of change that's really significant. Adapting to the unnatural rate of change that is in progress is going to be impossible for millions of people in developing nations. And things will be pretty unpleasant in developed countries in some areas which already endure harsh climates.

True enough and those millions of people should in the natural way of things not be living in these marginal areas... they only do so because of welfare and relief because we don't like to see all the suffering..... but nature will prevail... and there is no way of stopping that
