2 Major Aitken drive, from Centaurus rd to Stonewall place intersection
3 Dyers rd or Hackthorne rd from Centaurus rd to SoK (summit rd intersection), 5.7km, 326m

5 Mt Pleasant rd (causeway) to summit road, 4.7km, 403m
6 Kennedy's Bush road from Halswell Quarry park entrance to first rock crossing (Watlings Place intersection)
7 Gebbies from Teddington side plus Bastard, starting at small white bridge over stream (where real climb starts), up Gebbies, Right onto summit road, up Bastard finishing at top cattlestop

Procedure:
Open to anyone
1. Ride up the hill as fast as you can, and record your time. A registered time should be done in neutral conditions, i.e. no wind assistance (see below for clarification) or draughting.
2. Post your time in a reply to this thread. mfw will then update the above table (normally a couple of times a week).
3. Check out your position on the board and try and improve it by completing more climbs or riding up them faster! The table is sorted by number of times, then rider rankings. Your ranking is calculated from your time as it relates to other's times (rating estimates get more accurate as number of climbs go up). Rating scale: 100 = average, 120 = 20% faster than average, 80 = 20% slower than average.

Guidance on wind assistance:
=} If you are riding at the less competitive end of the board don't worry too much about wind assistance.
=} Otherwise, please try and be honest and don't post assisted times. A rough guide is a wind with velocity of more than approx. 2m/s (7kph) in the directions indicated by 'X's in table below, but ultimately it is up to you to decide.
By all means post assisted times but make it clear they are not to go on the board!
Checking the wind velocity and direction after a ride can be done on this site http://www.geog.canterbury.ac.nz/weathe ... rent.shtml
The best site for predicting conditions is http://www.windfinder.com/forecast/diamond_lyttelton_harbour If the wind bar is 4-5 knots or below then there is a chance that conditions will be suitable. If the bars are sitting around 0-2 then it's highly likely it'll be green for go.
Other wind information can be found at http://www.wunderground.com/global/stations/93780.html#PWS

Oh Oh! Better get in quick and surge to the top of the leaderboard while I still have a chance! Managing about 2hrs cycling a week after Junes EQ sucked nearly any motivation I had left...

Commute to work last Thursday 16:09 Govs to SOK
Got in a tussle with this 50yr old woman on way home up Dyers. Burst my boiler after the SOT and just kept her at bay with a stuning 19:50!

Welcome back for another season Ahad, suspect you might be setting us some marks on the new climb 7 - Gebbies Bastard combo, as you are a bit of a specialist on that side ;)

=} I've left climbs 1 and 6 (Sumner Evans / Evans Mt Pleasant) on the list assuming that they will back on line sometime soon, but won't take any times until it's governed safe to do so (don't want anyone breaking cordons!).

=} Replacement for Lyttleton - Evans is a new entry - Major Aitken drive, a very convenient ~7 minute wee climb with a few steep pinches, good road surface, and a jolly fun descent too. It joins up with Huntsbury but beware if descending that side the road is a mess.

=} The dummy times will be taken off as soon as times are posted, and once more than one time exists then the real ratings will begin.

Whoooot for Major Aitken. That's one of my fave's and one I always thought should be included. Love the Teddington/Bastard combo too - that's a "man's" test! :satan:

Recon you could Add Kennedy's Bush Rd. I recon from the Quarry entrance road, to the round-a-bout at the top. The alternative finish could be "The Ridge" which is where it starts to dip down to the round-a-bout. Lots of the Youngsters do their TT's up there so is a well known testing hill.

Isn't Evans to Mt Pleasant closed? It was last time I was up there last week.

is MA all fixed up now then? last time I rode it was on the mtb in march - at that stage I was glad of full suss (espec down) cos it was covered in exciting fissures and stepdowns :o

how about a merlewood/dyers/kidson/takahe drive/vic park road (finishing at the ranger station) combo for the real sickos :satan:

Or Worsleys. There is a nasty steep bit just after the hairpin.

that steep bit is pretty good (in the 'ooh look at the dancing spots' kind of way) - shame the angle drops after that though :(

aim of the nasty merlewood combo was something that's all desperate pinches and sustained grovelling (how abou we name it the 'green chunks on my shoes special')

Went for a ride on the way home from work on the commuting bike (mud gaurds, panier etc). Might try and do all the climbs on this bike and then see what difference the good bike makes.
Major Aitken drive 9.24
That was a real good climb. I think we've got a good mix this year. Don't add to many more, I think to many climbs puts people off having a go.

You mean like having a combined Gebbies/Bastard??

Good to hear your feedback on the climbs list guys ;)

I think the leaderboard is the most fun and competitive if many riders are posting, and limiting the climbs list and keeping them accessible helps this, but still having enough selection and variety to keep interest up.
So I'm not going to add Purau etc to the list even though they're great climbs. I'm still thinking about removing 6. Evans > Mt Pleasant - while it's a nice climbs it gets the least posts. If I do this maybe there's room for one more, the Kennedy's one is an interesting option...

Have your say now as once the times start coming in properly I'll freeze the list ;)

No, I mean to many climbs in total on the board. I think some people don't start posting times because they think there are to many and will never get round to doing them all, 7 or 8 is probably a good number. I know I've concidered not posting in previous years as I thought I just don't have enough free days to go riding lots of long rides in hills.
If you live close to the hills doing 8 climbs would be easy enough but in previous years dyers up hackthorne was the only ride I could do that would take less than 2 hours door to door. Major Aitkin Drive is going to give me another ride that will only take 90 - 100 minutes.

With Lyttleton>Evans being out of action there should be a whole lot more Evans > Mt Pleasant rides this year. I know I'm like to ride it a whole lot more. If you do get ride of it then the Kennedys ride would work for me as I could get a door to door ride with a climb in about an hour. So from a completly selfish point of view it would be good.
Gebbies/Bastard sounds great. It might put a few people of as it might seem a bit hard for some people, leave it in though, I can't wait to have a go at it.

I would agree with dropping Evans - Mt Pleasant in favour of Kennedys Bush. It would make a nice change.

too short - if evans/mt pleasant gets dropped we should put in worsleys to the end of the seal - we need more enduro climbs, not more short sprints
